## History

Aston Martin Racing announced the V8 Vantage GT4 on 14 November 2008 as the successor to the 4.3-litre Vantage N24 [0]. It kept the road car's bonded aluminium structure and the new 4,735 cc V8 with dry-sump lubrication [0][1]. Race preparation removed the interior, added a steel cage, a Lifeline fire system and a 120-litre endurance tank, and cut weight to 1,330 kg [0]. The gearbox was the road car's six-speed manual or the Sportshift paddle unit, driven through a Valeo twin-plate clutch [0]. Launch price was £96,645 with deliveries from January 2009 [0].

The car was updated for 2011 with a remapped ECU, a new splitter, a larger boot lip from the V12 Vantage, a carbon diffuser and a transmission oil cooler [2]. Bosch Motorsport developed a race ABS and traction control package that customers could specify for the first time [2]. By then Aston Martin Racing had sold more than 80 GT4s in two years and claimed the 2010 European GT4 Cup plus class wins at the Dubai, Nürburgring and Spa 24-hour races [2]. A 2012 body kit added a carbon rear spoiler, a redesigned cage for legroom and a lower fuel tank [3]. In the USA the car was sold at $225,000 in 2014 with about 450 hp [4].

The second generation was shown at Le Mans on 14 June 2018 alongside the Vantage GT3 [8]. Both used the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 shared with the road car and the GTE racer, and both were homologated from 1 March 2019 [8]. Aston Martin Racing, run by Prodrive, built the cars [9]. In its first British GT season the AMR GT4 took the GT4 drivers', Silver, Pro-Am and teams' titles [10]. Chassis numbers of this car carry the 17A prefix, for example AMR 17A-078-1 [22].

On 27 February 2024 Aston Martin revealed the third car, named simply Vantage GT4 [11]. It shares about 80% of its structure and mechanicals with the new road Vantage, keeps the eight-speed automatic locked to six gears, and weighs 1,465 kg dry [11][12]. Power is 469 bhp (476 PS), adjusted by boost under BoP [12][13]. It is sold only as a complete car, with no upgrade kit for the 2019 car, and over 40 were ordered for 2024 [11][13]. SRO BoP tables list it as the Vantage AMR GT4 EVO, and its chassis carry a 40A prefix [16][23].

## Palmarès

The 4.7 car won the 2010 European GT4 Cup and GT4 class honours at the Dubai, Nürburgring and Spa 24-hour races [2]. In British GT, Beechdean took the GT4 title in 2014 with Ross Wylie and Jake Giddings, and again in 2015 with Jamie Chadwick and Ross Gunn, who won at Rockingham and Silverstone [5][6]. In VLN the car scored repeated SP10 class wins; the October 2015 Reinoldus race was Aston Martin's 51st VLN class victory [7]. The AMR GT4 won the 2019 British GT GT4 drivers', Silver, Pro-Am and teams' titles with Tom Canning, Ash Hand, Beechdean AMR and TF Sport [10]. The 2024 car won on its second IMSA Pilot Challenge outing at Sebring with Rebel Rock Racing, leading an Aston 1-2 [14]. In 2025 it took the GT4 European Series Pro-Am drivers' and teams' titles with Mirage Racing, the FFSA French GT4 overall titles, and the IMSA GS Bronze class with Team TGM [15].

## What to check before you buy

Read the chassis plate: 17A prefix means 2019–2023 AMR GT4, 40A means the 2024 car: The two cars look alike from some angles but have different BoP lines, weights and electronics, and no upgrade kit exists between them. Ask for the SRO GT4 homologation file and SRO GT4 certificate with the car: SRO BoP documents state that GT4 cars are only eligible when presented with both; without them the car cannot race in SRO series. Get the engine number and its kilometres, and ask whether an AMG exchange credit applies: Sellers price engine condition into the car; a refresh was quoted at $36,000–42,000 after credit on a 2022 car. Ask for the gearbox and differential replacement dates and the ECU data download: UK dealers offer service records, component lifing and ECU data checks on request; one 2021 car had both units replaced in 2023. Ask whether the car has ever been retubbed and see the invoice: A retub means a new bonded aluminium structure; the car's identity then rests on the plate and paperwork. On a 4.7 car, confirm which update kit is fitted: 2011 ECU/diffuser/transmission cooler, Bosch ABS/TC, 2012 spoiler and cage: Early 2009 cars ran without race ABS or the aero kit; the updates change the car's speed and safety. Count the spares: springs sets, pedal box, looms, bodywork, wheels: Packages with the car range from a few spring sets to a $345,000 near-complete second car; the price should reflect it. Check the ride-height and BoP sheet the car last ran under: SRO fixes minimum weight, ballast and ride heights per car; a car set up for another series needs re-setting and re-scrutineering.

## Did you know

- In November 2008 Aston Martin Racing was the only maker selling cars in GT1, GT2, GT3 and GT4 at the same time [0].
- The 2024 car's bonnet is made of flax-fibre composite rather than carbon, with outlets cut for engine cooling [13].
- The 2024 GT4 ran disguised at the Daytona 24 Hours in January 2024, a month before its official reveal [12].

## Frequently asked questions

**Can a 2019–2023 AMR GT4 be upgraded to 2024 EVO spec?** No. Aston Martin sells the 2024 car only as a complete turnkey race car and offers no evo kit. Teams that want the new aero, dampers, ECU and gearbox software must buy a new car. The older car stays on its own SRO BoP line with the 2020 ECU map [11][16].

**What gearbox does each generation use?** The 4.7 car used the road car's six-speed manual or the Sportshift paddle gearbox with a Valeo twin-plate clutch. The 2024 car keeps the road car's ZF eight-speed automatic, locked to six gears and manual paddle mode by software. The 2019 car's gearbox is not confirmed in the sources used here [0][12][13].

**How much weight does the car run in SRO GT4 today?** For the 2026 season SRO lists the AMR GT4 at 1,445 kg minimum plus 15 kg ballast, so 1,460 kg without driver. The AMR GT4 EVO is listed at 1,475 kg with no ballast. Ride heights are 93 mm front and 102 mm rear, with BoP extras added per event [16].

**Is the 4.7 V8 Vantage GT4 still worth buying?** It is a simple, production-based car with a dry-sump V8 and a known record of 24-hour class wins. It no longer appears on the 2026 SRO BoP list, so plan on club, national or Aston Martin Owners Club racing rather than SRO series. Check which update kit it has [0][2][16].

**What are the real running costs?** Nobody publishes life figures. Listings show AMR GT4 engines replaced after two to three seasons and an engine refresh around $36,000–42,000 after an AMG credit. Gearboxes and differentials have been replaced after two seasons. In 2014 an arrive-and-drive weekend in the 4.7 car cost $35,000 [4][17][21].

**How do I tell the generations apart quickly?** Old-shape Vantage body with 4.7 badge or Sportshift paddles: 2009–2018 car. New-shape body with chassis plate 17A: 2019–2023 AMR GT4. New-shape body with wider grille, swan-neck wing and plate 40A: 2024 car, called AMR GT4 EVO by SRO [12][16][23].
