BMW 2002 (historic race)

The BMW 2002 built the marque's motorsport legend before the M badge existed: European Touring Car champion, the car that brought turbocharging to touring racing in 1969, and today one of historic tin-top racing's most beloved and usable mounts.

History

The '02 series saved BMW commercially and militarily armed its racing department: the 2002's light unibody, willing M10 four and superb balance made it the touring car to beat as the 1960s closed. The works and Alpina/Schnitzer-prepared cars fought Alfa's GTA and Ford's Escort across Europe, and in 1969 BMW dropped a hammer — the 2002 TIK ran turbocharging to around 280 hp, the first turbo touring car, taking the European title before the technology was reined in.

Homologation specials followed the racing: the tii's injection, the rare 1973 2002 Turbo road car, and a decade of Group 2 development that kept 2002s winning national championships deep into the 1970s as the 3.0 CSL took over the headlines.

The historic scene is where the 2002 thrives now: FIA Appendix K Group 2 grids, the Heritage Touring Cup, German youngtimer series and US vintage racing all run strong 2002 fields, supported by a parts industry (and BMW Classic) that makes the car among the cheapest genuinely front-capable historic tourers to campaign. On the marketplace, honest race-prepared 2002s remain the value entry to period BMW motorsport.

Palmarès

European Touring Car Challenge champion 1969 (works 2002 TIK, Dieter Quester's title season) after 1968's class domination; European hillclimb touring titles of the period; national touring championships across Europe into the mid-1970s in Alpina, Schnitzer and privateer hands; a half-century since of historic touring silverware from Appendix K to youngtimer grids.

What to check before you buy

Establish what the shell really is: genuine period race cars with history (Alpina/Schnitzer provenance is documented and expensive), later-built historics to Group 2 spec, and road-car conversions each price differently — the FIA HTP file and period evidence sort them. Rust is the eternal 2002 tax: check shock towers, rails, floors and the nose panel seams before anything mechanical. On engines, verify legal spec for your target class (Kugelfischer injection versus carburettors changes eligibility), and treat 'Turbo' claims with forensic care — real 2002 Turbos are documented and their racing use was minimal. A sorted Appendix K car with fresh papers is the smart buy over a project.

Did you know

  • The 1969 title-winning 2002 TIK was motorsport's first turbocharged touring car — so effective the authorities effectively legislated turbos out the following season.
  • Alpina and Schnitzer both built their reputations on the '02 platform — the tuning houses BMW later absorbed into its works orbit started as 2002 racers.
  • The 2002's US importer Max Hoffman pushed the model into SCCA sedan racing so hard that period American grids often ran deeper 2002 fields than Europe's.
