History

Pit signalling predates every electronic channel racing has: the board hung at the wall — position, gap, laps, IN — was Grand Prix racing's only telemetry for most of its history, and the discipline never died because its failure mode never appeared: boards work through radio silence, electronics bans, rain-soaked comms and the endurance-racing night. Modern boards productised the tradition in composite form — carbon and lightweight panels, high-contrast slide-in number and letter sets, handles engineered for the marshal-height hang over debris fencing.

The user base spans racing's breadth: motorcycle racing (where rider-radio limits keep boards primary equipment), endurance car racing's redundancy culture, karting's electronics-free classes, historic racing's period correctness, and club paddocks where a board plus a stopwatch is still a functioning race-engineering department.

As equipment, boards are simple goods with honest economics: new pricing is modest, used boards trade complete-with-number-sets or not meaningfully at all, and the buying questions are weight (long stints at arm's length count grams), panel stiffness in wind, number-set completeness and legibility engineering — contrast and font mattering more than material fashion.
