Logitech G29 / G920
The Logitech G29 is sim racing's people's champion: the gear-driven wheel that introduced more drivers to virtual motorsport than every high-end brand combined, heir to the G25/G27 dynasty that defined the hobby's first mainstream decade.
History
Logitech's G25 (2006) created the serious-but-affordable sim wheel category — clutch pedal, H-pattern shifter, real force feedback — and the G27 refined it into the default hardware of sim racing's formative years. The G29 (PlayStation) and G920 (Xbox) of 2015 carried the formula into the modern console era: the same proven dual-motor, helical-gear feedback design, a sturdier wheel with better materials, and pedals whose brake gained a progressive rubber stop.
Criticized at launch as conservative, the G29 instead proved the point of standardization: a decade in production, tens of millions of players' first force feedback, the hardware baseline of countless esports qualifiers, school programmes and rental rigs, and the recommended starter answer in every sim community — because it simply works, forever, on everything. The G923 (2021) added TrueForce processing without changing the essence; the direct-drive G Pro finally gave Logitech a flagship above it.
As used hardware the G29 is the Miata of sim racing: ubiquitous, cheap, indestructible, endlessly supported by parts donors, and the rational first step before any four-figure rig — with a resale floor so stable it approaches free ownership.
Palmarès
The G29's honours are demographic: the best-selling racing wheel family in history, standard equipment of GT Academy-style programmes (whose graduates reached real professional grids), esports qualifiers and racing schools worldwide — the hardware on which a generation's first laps, real careers included, were driven.
What to check before you buy
Check the known wear points: gear-train notchiness or grinding under load (worn helical gears — usable but price accordingly), potentiometer spiking in the pedals (cleanable, a classic fix) and the brake's rubber stop condition. Verify the shifter is included if listed (often sold separately) and platform variant (G29 PS/PC vs G920 Xbox/PC). At typical used prices there is no diligence beyond a ten-minute test — the G29's honesty is the product.
Did you know
- GT Academy — the Nissan/PlayStation programme that turned sim racers into professional endurance drivers — ran its early mass qualifiers on Logitech G-series hardware.
- The G25/27/29 gear-feedback design has remained fundamentally unchanged since 2006 — an 18-year production philosophy in an industry that reinvents itself every three.
- Logitech has sold the G series in numbers estimated in eight figures — more force-feedback wheels than the rest of the industry's combined history.
