The 13B is the rotary that refused to lose: Mazda's twin-rotor — peripheral-ported into a 9,000 rpm scream — that owned IMSA's small-bore classes, took class silverware everywhere, and still defines budget power-to-weight racing.

History

Mazda's 13B twin-rotor (1.3 litres nominal, physics arguing otherwise) became competition's great giant-killer through the peripheral-port revelation: race porting transformed the compact, near-vibrationless rotary into a ~300 hp screamer weighing less than rivals' cylinder heads seemed to, and IMSA's GTU field spent the late 70s and 80s learning that RX-7s simply did not break — Mazda accumulated class wins at Daytona and across American endurance racing in numbers that embarrassed displacement logic.

The engine's racing genealogy spans naturally aspirated peripheral-ports, street-port club builds, turbocharged drag and drift monsters, and the bridge-port folklore between — with the 13B's endurance credibility culminating in the rotary lineage's 1991 Le Mans triumph (the 787B's four-rotor being the family's cathedral).

Today the 13B powers historic IMSA-style racers, club RX-7s, drift builds and specials, sustained by a global rotary specialist culture whose expertise is the ownership prerequisite: apex seals and rebuild intervals are the known liturgy, builder reputation is everything, and a documented fresh peripheral-port from a name shop is the market's premium object.

What to check before you buy

Builder name is the engine: rotary rebuild quality varies more than piston-engine work, so a 13B's value is its shop invoice — porting spec (street/bridge/peripheral), seal specification (the apex-seal choice defines lifespan), dyno sheet and hours since fresh. Compression testing rotary-style (per-face numbers) is the inspection; demand it. Verify generation and configuration (carburetted versus injected, NA versus turbo lineage) against your class rules. Peripheral-ports are glorious consumables — budget rebuild intervals honestly. The specialist network is global but thin; buy where support exists.
