Osella PA30 (Hillclimb)
The Osella PA30 is Italy's answer to the mountain: a ground-effect two-seat prototype around an ex-F3000 Zytek-Judd V8, built by hillclimbing's most storied constructor for the European championship's top prototype class.
History
Osella — the Turin constructor whose sports prototypes have contested European hillclimbs since the 1960s, with a 1980s Formula 1 interlude — distilled its mountain craft into the PA30: a ground-effect two-seater in the big-prototype class, powered by the naturally aspirated 3.0-litre Zytek-badged Judd KV V8 from Formula 3000, driving through a Sadev six-speed semi-automatic in a package of just 575 kg.
The PA30 and its single-seater sibling FA30 have defined the sharp end of the FIA European Hill Climb Championship's prototype categories through the 2010s and 2020s, fighting the Norma M20 dynasty on courses like Trento-Bondone, Rechberg and St. Ursanne, while dominating rounds of Italy's CIVM where Osella loyalty runs deepest.
Ownership is a specialist affair in the best sense: Osella itself remains a small, accessible factory, the Judd-derived V8s are serviced by a known circle of engine shops, and cars trade within the hillclimb community with venue data attached. For a driver stepping up from CN two-litres, the PA30 is the classical Italian route to outright mountain competitiveness.
Palmarès
FIA European Hill Climb Championship category race wins and podium campaigns through the 2010s–2020s against the Norma benchmark; Italian CIVM round wins and championship placings with the marque's core drivers; course-record runs at CIVM venues — part of an Osella hillclimb lineage claiming decades of European and Italian titles.
What to check before you buy
Buy through the community: PA30s change hands with Osella's knowledge, and the factory file (chassis history, crash repairs, update state) is the provenance document. The Zytek/Judd KV's rebuild status is the cost centre — confirm hours and which engine shop last had it apart. Check ground-effect floor and skirts for mountain-armco damage, Sadev service history, and which venue gear-sets and data accompany the car; in hillclimbing the setup book is half the value. Expect the buying process itself to run through Italian paddock relationships rather than open listings.
Did you know
- Osella is the only constructor racing today whose founder's cars have contested European hillclimbs across seven consecutive decades — Enzo Osella's first Abarth-derived prototypes date to the 1960s.
- The PA30's Judd KV V8 architecture began life in 1990s Formula 3000 — mountain racing became the engine family's longest career.
- PA-series Osellas run passenger seats purely for class rules — the 'two-seater' cockpit's second space is, by tradition, barely humanoid.
