Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ (Rally Raid)

The GR DKR Hilux T1+ is Toyota Gazoo Racing's Dakar weapon: a tube-frame, V8-powered ultimate-class rally raid prototype wearing a Hilux silhouette, and a Dakar Rally overall winner in the T1+ era.

History

Toyota's South African operation (Hallspeed/TGR SA) built the Hilux Dakar programme through a decade of evolution: mid-engined petrol V8 conversions of the ladder-frame concept culminated in Nasser Al-Attiyah's 2019 Dakar win, before the 2022 T1+ regulations — bigger tyres (37-inch), longer suspension travel (350 mm), wider tracks — prompted a clean-sheet car: tubular chromoly chassis, carbon body, and the twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 from the Land Cruiser/LC300 family replacing the old NA V8.

The T1+ Hilux won immediately: Al-Attiyah's 2022 and 2023 Dakar victories plus World Rally-Raid Championship titles established it alongside Prodrive's Hunter and X-raid's Mini as the ultimate class' benchmarks, with Toyota's fleet strategy — works cars plus customer entries through Overdrive Racing — filling the top ten every January.

For buyers, the Hilux T1+ occupies rally raid's professional tier: customer chassis genuinely circulate (Overdrive runs privateer campaigns at Dakar every year), making it one of the few current top-class cross-country prototypes an experienced private team can buy, run and score with — with Saudi dunes, Morocco and the W2RC calendar as the natural habitat.

Palmarès

Dakar Rally overall winner 2019 (previous-gen), 2022 and 2023 (T1+, Al-Attiyah); World Rally-Raid Championship titles 2022–2023; Morocco/Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and W2RC round wins; Dakar top-ten lockouts via the Overdrive customer fleet — the modern ultimate class' most consistent package.

What to check before you buy

Customer cars route through TGR SA/Overdrive channels — the chassis file (event history, crash repairs, update state to current-year homologation) and engine programme (the GR V6's rebuild schedule and support contract) define the purchase. Verify T1+ homologation validity for your target season, suspension specification (damper programmes evolve yearly and matter enormously in dunes), and the spares package's realism: rally raid consumes suspension and drivetrain components at rates circuit people don't believe. Factor navigation equipment and FIA cross-country compliance into any campaign budget.

Did you know

  • The T1+ Hilux shares almost nothing with the pickup beyond silhouette cues — even the 'Hilux' V6 arrived from the Land Cruiser 300's engine bay.
  • Overdrive Racing's customer Hiluxes have finished Dakar in the top five while running as privateers — rally raid's equivalent of a customer GT3 podium at Le Mans.
  • Al-Attiyah's 2022 win made the Hilux the first car victorious under the T1+ rules — Toyota beat the regulations' own instigators to their punch.
