History

Yamaha's TZ250 (1973, succeeding the air-cooled TD lineage) industrialised Grand Prix access: a water-cooled production racer any licence holder could order — parallel-twin generations evolving through monoshock, Power Valve and aluminium-frame eras into the 1990s V-twins that mirrored the works YZR250s — sold in the hundreds per year at the model's peak, making the TZ the 250 class's entire privateer infrastructure: world-championship grids beyond the works row, every national 250 series on earth, and the club road racing that fed them.

The results record is the category's own: world 250 titles in the customer era's reach, national championships beyond counting, and the apprenticeship role — the TZ250 was the bike careers climbed through between production racing and factory contracts for a generation of Grand Prix names.
