Aston Martin DBR9 GT1 (2005–2011)

The DBR9 is the V12 GT1 car Prodrive built for Aston Martin Racing from 2005. It won its class at Sebring on debut and at Le Mans in 2007 and 2008. Fewer than 20 exist. Today it is a collector and historic endurance car, eligible for Peter Auto and Masters Legends grids.

History

Aston Martin Racing, the Prodrive-run racing arm, unveiled the DBR9 in late 2004 as its GT1 car 2. It kept the DB9 road car's aluminium structure and the V12 block and heads 1. Prodrive designed, built and ran the programme from Banbury 3. The plan was 32 cars: works chassis 1 to 12 and customer chassis 101 to 120 2. Customer cars were priced at £475,000 2.

The car won GT1 on its debut at the 2005 Sebring 12 Hours 1. Works-backed entries ran under Aston Martin Racing, Larbre Compétition and BMS Scuderia Italia 1. Private buyers included Team Modena, Jetalliance, Phoenix Racing, Gigawave, Bell Motorsports and Strakka 1. Chassis 101 was the first customer car, delivered in July 2005 7.

Far fewer than 32 were completed. Published totals range from 16 to 19, depending on how rebuilt and late chassis are counted 1458. The cars kept racing in the FIA GT1 World Championship in 2010 and 2011 with Hexis AMR and Young Driver AMR 1. Chassis 109, described by RM Sotheby's as the last built, crashed heavily at Spa in May 2010 5.

By 2019 owners were entering DBR9s in historic series, and Prodrive was rebuilding their engines 10. Prodrive also restores its old works cars through Prodrive Legends, using its original build data 11. The Le Mans 2007 class winner returned to racing in Peter Auto's Endurance Racing Legends in 2019 8. Auction prices rose from $440,000 in 2013 to €2,255,000 in 2023 64. The DBRS9 is a separate, cheaper GT3 car on the same DB9 basis 17.

Palmarès

The DBR9 won GT1 at the 2005 Sebring 12 Hours on its debut 1. Chassis 10, car 009, won GT1 at Le Mans in 2007 and finished fifth overall 18. Car 009 won GT1 again at Le Mans in 2008 1. Larbre took the 2006 Le Mans Series teams' title, and the works team won five 2006 ALMS rounds 1. Customer chassis 101 won the 2006 Mil Milhas and three 1,000 km races in 2008 7. Hexis AMR won the 2011 FIA GT1 teams' championship with DBR9/1 1.

What to check before you buy

Confirm the chassis number and whether it is a works (1-10) or customer (101-series) car: Works cars with Le Mans or Sebring class wins carry the strongest values; numbering follows the original works and customer split 12. Ask whether the original tub and front bulkhead survive: At least two cars were rebuilt on new or repaired structures after crashes 35. Get engine hours since the last Prodrive rebuild and the dyno sheet: Design life is about 30 hours 8. Prodrive rebuilds to zero hours with a dyno test 9. Check the technical passport status (Peter Auto, FIA HTP or ACO): Endurance Racing Legends requires a valid passport for 1994-2010 cars 12. The last-built car was offered still needing FIA inspection and an HTP 5. Ask which year's specification the car is in, with period regulations and BoP papers: Peter Auto asks entrants to prove the car matches an eligible period specification, including ACO or FIA BoP decisions 12. Cars raced in 2011 fall outside the 1994-2010 window. Date of the last crack-test certificates: GT1 certificates are valid for three years and a new one is needed after an accident 12. List the spares, software and electronics included: Sales have included spare wheel sets, splitters, carbon discs, ECU software and Pectel/Pi materials 34. Tax and import status: European lots have carried VAT on the full price 45. US-imported cars use the EPA racing exemption, cannot be road registered and paid 2.5% duty 3.

Known issues

  • Replaced tubs and front structures after big accidents — DBR9/9 was rebuilt on a new chassis tub after a Spa 24 Hours crash 3. DBR9/109 had its front bulkhead replaced using a jig made from another DBR9 5. Identity questions follow such rebuilds. 3
  • Short engine life — Prodrive's engine engineer says the V12 is designed to last about 30 hours 8. Hours since rebuild drive the price and the first year's budget. 8
  • Engine ancillaries wear — One Prodrive repair replaced intake trumpets, water and oil pumps, exhaust valves and an airbox; the parts invoice was £12,763 5. £12,763 parts for that repair (about 2014) 5
  • Period electronics are dated — Cars left racing with Pectel/Pi electronics; sellers fit newer ECUs, loggers and dashes 48. Peter Auto allows a modern engine management system 12. 4
  • Crack-test certificates expire — Peter Auto requires certified testing of suspension, uprights, hubs, steering parts and wheels. For GT1 cars certificates last three years 12. 12
  • Demanding sequential gearbox for amateurs — The Xtrac box is fully manual with clutch for downshifts. One owner had an auto-blip system added 8. DBR9/101 needed a gearbox rebuild during the 2008 Le Mans race 7. 8

Frequently asked questions

How many Aston Martin DBR9s were built?

Sources disagree. Wikipedia says 16, RM Sotheby's has said 17 and 18, and a Goodwood article says 19. The original plan was 32. Known chassis numbers run 1 to 10 for works cars and 101 to 106 plus 109 for customer cars. Ask the seller for the Prodrive build record.

Is a works car worth more than a customer car?

Usually the period record matters more than the label. The best-known cars are works chassis with Le Mans class wins, such as chassis 10. Customer chassis 106 still made €2,255,000 in 2023 because of a long FIA GT and Le Mans history. Check results by chassis, not by team name.

Who can rebuild the V12 engine?

Prodrive offers a full rebuild to zero hours with a dyno test for the DBR9 V12. It also restores its former works cars through Prodrive Legends and holds rights to many parts. Budget for a rebuild roughly every 30 hours of running, the engine's stated design life.

Where can I race a DBR9 today?

Peter Auto's Endurance Racing Legends takes 2000-2010 GT1 cars in class GT1B, with a technical passport. Masters Endurance Legends lists the DBR9 in its GT1 category. Both need the car in a documented period specification and current crack-test certificates.

Can a DBR9 be road registered?

No. Cars are sold on a bill of sale only. A US-imported example came in under the EPA racing exemption and could only be used for racing. Plan for trailer transport and track-only use.
