BBS Motorsport E88 wheels
The BBS E88 is the racing wheel as icon: the multi-piece magnesium-centre design behind decades of GT, touring and formula programmes — centre-lock jewellery that works for a living, and a collector market of its own.
History
BBS Motorsport's E-series established the template modern racing wheels still follow: modular multi-piece construction — forged magnesium or aluminium centres mated to spun rim halves — allowing per-car offsets, width changes and crash-damage economics no monoblock could match. The E88 became the family's most recognisable citizen: the centre-lock staple of GT and prototype paddocks through the 90s and 2000s, its gold centres a visual signature of the era.
Works and customer programmes across sports-car racing, touring cars and single-seater categories ran E-series fitments as default equipment, with BBS's motorsport division supplying series and teams at industrial scale while the road-car tuning world canonised the look.
Today the E88 lives twice: as working equipment on historic and club GT machinery (parts and rebuild support persist through BBS Motorsport and wheel specialists), and as collector objects — correct-fitment period sets for significant cars trading at prices that startle people who think of wheels as consumables. Authenticity forensics, as always where value gathers, came with the appreciation.
Palmarès
Under GT, prototype and touring-car winners across three decades of international racing — Le Mans, DTM-era and GT-championship programmes ran E-series fitments as standard — plus the modern record: historic-racing service and a collector market treating correct sets as automotive jewellery.
What to check before you buy
Fitment correctness is the value: centre-lock versus bolted, centre PCD/offset and rim widths must match the intended car — E88 modularity means mismatched assemblies abound, fine for use, poison for collector pricing. Magnesium centres age: crack-test any set with unknown history (mandatory before track use), inspect rim-half joints and hardware, and treat corrosion-pitted magnesium honestly — refurbishment has limits. Provenance to a period programme multiplies value. Rebuild support exists (new rim halves, hardware) via specialists; centres are the scarce, price-defining components. Replicas exist — weigh and measure before believing.
Did you know
- E88 modularity meant one centre design served dozens of cars — teams changed widths and offsets by swapping rim halves in the truck.
- The gold-centre BBS look became so canonical that road-car culture spent decades imitating racing's most functional aesthetic decision.
- Magnesium racing centres have service lives like any stressed component — the collector market's hardest lesson is that beauty crack-tests like everything else.
