Benetton B194

History

Rory Byrne built the B194 for the new refuelling era: compact, aggressively packaged around Ford's Zetec-R V8 — down on power against Renault's V10s but light, agile and drivable at the limit in exactly the way its lead driver exploited. The 1994 season it dominated began in triumph and unravelled into F1's most traumatic year: Imola's tragedies, then a rolling war between Benetton and the FIA.

Schumacher won six of the first seven races and eight overall, surviving a two-race ban and the Spa disqualification (the plank), while investigations into launch-control software found options in the code but no proven use. The title arrived at Adelaide via the collision with Hill that debate has never released. However weighed, the record stands: Schumacher's first championship, Benetton's arrival at the summit.

As collector objects, B194 chassis carry that whole voltage: Schumacher-raced examples are apex Schumacher-market assets (his first-title machinery), the Zetec-R V8 is specialist but sustainable, and cars appear in demonstration programmes where the type's sound and history guarantee centre stage.
