Brabham BT42

The Brabham BT42 is Gordon Murray's F1 debut: the 1973 triangular-section DFV car that rebuilt Brabham's credibility and sired the race-winning BT44 — a distinctive, rational entry to pre-'78 historic Formula 1.

History

Bernie Ecclestone's first clean-sheet Brabham came from a 26-year-old South African: Gordon Murray's BT42 (1973) with its signature triangular cross-section monocoque — chosen for stiffness, low centre of gravity and clean airflow to the rear — announced the design intelligence that would define the marque's second golden age.

The 1973 season restored respectability: Reutemann took podiums and regular points, the car qualified consistently in the top ranks, and privateer BT42s extended the type's grid presence into 1974 while the works moved to the evolved BT44 — the pyramid-section concept matured into a genuine winner. The BT42's role in history is exactly that: proof-of-concept for one of F1's great design lineages.

Masters Historic Formula One's pre-'78 grids give the type its modern stage: DFV-Hewland running gear keeps operation standard, the distinctive tub shape makes it instantly recognisable in a field of look-alike Cosworth kit cars, and values sit below the winning BT44s — the connoisseur's route into Murray-lineage F1 ownership at the lineage's founding price point.

1973 World Championship podiums and points (Reutemann's fourth places among them) restoring Brabham to the constructors' top tier; privateer campaign results into 1974 — and a continuing Masters Historic F1 pre-'78 career where the type remains a grid fixture.

What to check before you buy

The small chassis run is register-documented — verify frame identity, works-versus-privateer period history and tub originality (the triangular skins are the car's signature; replaced sections must be declared and priced). Standard DFV-Hewland audit applies: engine builder and hours, DG300 internals, crack-test currency on suspension and wings. Masters papers define usability; Monaco Historique acceptance adds ceiling. The buy case is the lineage: BT42s price under BT44s while sharing the Murray story — the founding document at a discount.

Did you know

  • Murray was 26 when the BT42 made him F1's youngest chief designer — Ecclestone hired the draughtsman and fired convention.
  • The triangular tub section was chosen partly by intuition — Murray later admitted the aerodynamic reasoning came after the structural elegance.
  • BT42 to BT44 to fan car: the tub in this car begins the design line that produced F1's most notorious single-race legend five years later.
