Brabham BT6 (Formula Junior)
The Brabham BT6 was Formula Junior's final-year benchmark: the 1963 Tauranac customer car that swept the category's last great season — today a front-line mount in historic FJ's flourishing worldwide revival.
History
Formula Junior's 1963 swansong season met MRD's rising customer-car machine at full stride: the BT6 refined Tauranac's spaceframe formula for the 1,100cc class — Cosworth-Ford power, Hewland gears, proportions and geometry that made most rivals feel agricultural — and shipped to privateers and semi-works teams across Britain, Europe, and both Americas.
The season's roll of honour made the type's name: BT6s won across the British and continental FJ calendar's fiercest fields — the category's last year gathered future Grand Prix talent in one class — with Denny Hulme's Brabham-works campaigns among the era's dominant runs before Junior split into F2 and F3 for 1964.
The historic Formula Junior movement — arguably historic racing's best-organised global community — restored the BT6 to its old rank: FIA Lurani Trophy grids and national FJ series run the type at the sharp end of the rear-engined class, the international circus (UK, Europe, US, Australasia) provides year-round racing, and the Tauranac spares-and-registers ecosystem keeps ownership rational.
Palmarès
British and European Formula Junior race wins through 1963's final championship season — Hulme's works-supported campaign the headline — plus national FJ honours across export markets; now a front-running rear-engined contender in the FIA Lurani Trophy and the worldwide historic FJ movement.
What to check before you buy
Historic FJ's organisation is the buyer's friend: the movement's registers document BT6 identities and period histories thoroughly, so frame verification is straightforward — insist on it anyway, as Junior's popularity has bred continuation frames. The 1,100 Cosworth-Ford engine is the running-cost centre (specialist but well-served; verify builder and hours), Hewland Mk-series internals the usual audit. Lurani Trophy eligibility papers define usability. Against monoposto historics generally, front-rank FJ remains value racing — and the BT6 is its Brabham-badged blue chip.
Did you know
- Formula Junior's 1958–63 lifespan produced an absurd alumni list — the 1963 grids the BT6 raced contained much of the next decade's F1 entry.
- Historic FJ's world tour runs championship-quality grids on four continents — few historic categories let one car race internationally all year, every year.
- Denny Hulme swept to the 1963 Junior honours in works Brabhams while employed as the team's mechanic-driver — the future champion built the cars he beat everyone with.
