Dallara F2 2018

The F2 2018 is the current gateway to Formula 1: the halo-equipped, turbocharged spec chassis in which Leclerc's successors — Russell, Norris, Schumacher, Piastri — earned their superlicences, racing on Grand Prix weekends before the F1 audience.

History

When the FIA rebranded GP2 as the Formula 2 Championship, Dallara's F2 2018 delivered the category's generational reset: the halo (introduced simultaneously with F1), a 3.4-litre single-turbo Mecachrome V6 of 620 hp, an F1-style high-rake aero philosophy, and DRS. The brief was explicit — prepare drivers for contemporary Grand Prix cars in every dimension from tyre management (Pirelli's F1-style compounds) to procedure.

Its champions read as an F1 draft list: George Russell (2018), Nyck de Vries, Mick Schumacher, Oscar Piastri (2021, as a rookie), Felipe Drugovich, Théo Pourchaire — with virtually every current F1 rookie of the era passing through. The car's supporting role on F1 weekends gives it unmatched visibility for a feeder chassis.

The 2024 bodywork update refreshed the aero but retained the core platform, keeping earlier tubs eligible for private running. Retired F2 2018s now flow into demonstration programmes, hillclimbs and the ex-feeder track-day world, occupying the niche GP2/08s held a decade earlier — the fastest circuit machinery a private individual can realistically own and run, short of an actual Formula 1 car.

What to check before you buy

Fleet cars belong to established F2 teams and cycle out via known brokers — the chassis file (Dallara-tracked crash history, tub number) and the Mecachrome engine's hours/lease status are the transaction's spine. The turbo V6's servicing runs through Mecachrome's programme; confirm a private-running support plan before purchase, because the electronics and fuel system assume professional operation. Halo-era tubs cannot be 'de-haloed' for classic events — buy for modern demonstration/BOSS-style use. Provenance premiums apply to championship-winning chassis, with Piastri/Russell cars already trading as collectibles.
