Ferrari F355 Challenge

History

Ferrari Challenge's second act ran on the F355: from 1995, customers ordered the Challenge kit (later factory-built cars) — cage, racing seats and harnesses, slicks, uprated brakes and exhaust — over the road car's 3.5-litre five-valve-per-cylinder V8 and, crucially, the gated six-speed manual that later Challenge generations abandoned. Around 100 hp/litre of naturally aspirated shriek in a package still road-registrable in period made the formula irresistible; grids filled across Europe and North America through 2000.

The series' role matured with the car: national Challenge champions graduated to GT racing, the Finali crowned world winners, and the 355 era established Challenge as a permanent Ferrari institution rather than a marketing experiment.

Collecting has since claimed the survivors: unmolested factory Challenge cars with Classiche-documentable history now outprice equivalent road 355s, the gated shifter and analogue character driving demand the turbo-era cars cannot touch. Racing use continues in one-make classics grids and Ferrari club events, but the market's centre of gravity has moved — the F355 Challenge is bought today as the last analogue racing Ferrari.
