Honda CRF450R (Motocross)
The CRF450R has been Honda's premier-class motocross weapon since 2002 — the four-stroke that finished what the two-stroke ban started, with AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross titles from Ricky Carmichael's perfect seasons to the Jett Lawrence era.
History
Honda launched the CRF450R in 2002 as the four-stroke revolution consolidated, and Ricky Carmichael immediately wrote its founding legend: his 2002 and 2004 AMA Pro Motocross seasons were literally perfect — every moto won — a feat no other rider and machine have matched. The Unicam engine (a Honda-specific SOHC-with-DOHC-breathing layout), aluminium twin-spar frame and relentless refinement made the CRF the sport's engineering reference through the 2000s.
The model's fortunes tracked its riders: the Carmichael dynasty gave way to leaner years, then the HRC-backed resurgence — fuel injection (2009), the 2017 generation's return to a coil-spring fork, and the 2021 platform that carried Jett Lawrence's spectacular arrival: the young Australian's 2023 Pro Motocross season repeated the perfect-season myth (every moto won) in his rookie 450 year, followed by Supercross titles that restored red to the sport's summit.
As the best-selling 450 line of the era alongside KTM and Yamaha, the CRF's used market is enormous and honest — a generational ladder from current race bikes to the budget entry point of serious motocross.
Palmarès
AMA Pro Motocross perfect seasons 2002 and 2004 (Carmichael) and 2023 (Lawrence, rookie year); AMA Supercross titles 2003–04 era (Carmichael) and 2024–25 era (Lawrence, Sexton-adjacent years); MXGP wins with Gajser's world championships (2016, 2019, 2020, 2022 era on CRF machinery); Motocross of Nations victories — a two-decade premier-class record.
What to check before you buy
Hour meter versus service log is the whole negotiation: top-end intervals on race-used 450s are measured in tens of hours, and valve checks (Unicam shims) should be documented. Inspect the aluminium frame for crack repairs at the cradle welds, check clutch and gearbox feel (early-2020s bikes had known clutch sensitivities under pro loads), suspension service dates and linkage bearings. Generation matters for setup culture — 2017–2020 and 2021+ platforms behave differently; buy the one your references know how to set up.
Did you know
- Carmichael's two perfect outdoor seasons on the CRF450R (24/24 motos, twice) built the 'GOAT' nickname the sport still uses without qualification.
- Honda's Unicam layout — one cam operating four valves via mixed direct/rocker action — exists to shrink the head; it has powered every CRF450R since 2002.
- Jett Lawrence's 2023 perfect rookie season came 19 years after Carmichael's last — the same bike lineage bookending a generation.
