Harley-Davidson XR-750

The XR-750 is the most successful racing motorcycle in American history: half a century of flat track domination, more AMA Grand National wins than any machine ever, and the bike Evel Knievel made a pop-culture icon.

History

Built in 1970 to replace the outlawed KR side-valve, the alloy-engined XR-750 of 1972 became flat track's eternal answer: a 750 cc air-cooled 45-degree V-twin tuned for the broad, controllable power that half-mile and mile dirt ovals demand, in a chassis whose geometry Harley's race shop refined continuously but never fundamentally changed.

The statistics are unmatched in American racing: XR-750s won 29 of 37 AMA Grand National Championships between 1972 and 2008, and its win total on the Grand National tour — hundreds of victories with riders from Mert Lawwill through Jay Springsteen (works no. 9 dynasty), Scott Parker's nine titles, Chris Carr and beyond — makes it statistically the winningest racing motorcycle ever built. Even as Indian's FTR750 finally dethroned it in the 2010s, privateer XRs kept scoring.

Parallel fame came airborne: Evel Knievel's jump bikes were XR-750s, putting the model in the Smithsonian and the world's imagination. Today the XR-750 is American racing's blue-chip collectible — genuine works and championship bikes at the top, period privateer racers actively campaigned in AFT-adjacent vintage classes and prized by collectors of Americana far beyond motorcycling.

Palmarès

29 AMA Grand National Championships (1972–2008) including Parker's record nine; the all-time win record on the Grand National tour; Springsteen's and Carr's dynasties; Battle of the Twins road-race success in Lucifer's Hammer form; and five decades of continuous competitiveness unmatched by any racing design.

What to check before you buy

Engine authenticity leads: genuine XR-750 cases (versus iron-XR or Sportster-based conversions) are documented by casting numbers and the community knows the production history. Championship or works provenance (H-D race department records, period photos) multiplies value several times. Check crank and cam-gear rebuild history — race XR engines run tight schedules — frame originality (many were re-framed in period, honestly documented cars trade fine), and whether the bike is set up for vintage racing or display. Knievel-associated claims demand forensic documentation; most are false.

Did you know

  • Scott Parker's nine Grand National titles — all on XR-750s — remain American motorcycling's championship record.
  • Lucifer's Hammer, the XR-based road racer, won Daytona's Battle of the Twins in 1983 and gave the ageing engine a second discipline.
  • The Smithsonian holds a Knievel XR-750 — one of the few racing motorcycles in America's national collection.
