Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R (Superbike race)
The ZX-10R is the most successful superbike of the modern WSBK era: the platform beneath Jonathan Rea's record six consecutive world titles (2015–2020) and a mainstay of national superbike and endurance grids everywhere.
History
Kawasaki launched the ZX-10R in 2004, but the model's defining chapter began with the 2011 clean-sheet generation and the Kawasaki Racing Team's decision to concentrate its factory budget on WSBK rather than MotoGP. The investment created superbike racing's greatest dynasty: Tom Sykes' 2013 title, then Jonathan Rea's six consecutive championships from 2015 to 2020 — a run without precedent in the series.
The road bike evolved in lockstep with racing needs: the 2016 update brought a race-focused engine and electronics, and the ZX-10RR homologation variants (lighter internals, Pankl rods, revised head) existed explicitly to legalize KRT's race specification. That pipeline made the ZX-10R the pragmatic choice far beyond WSBK — BSB, MotoAmerica, IDM, and especially endurance, where Team SRC and Webike Trickstar Kawasakis collected EWC titles and Bol d'Or wins.
On the used market, ex-team and kitted ZX-10Rs are plentiful by superbike standards: genuine championship machinery surfaces through the professional teams' cycles, while a deep bench of kit-parts club bikes serves national racing — all supported by Kawasaki's long-running race-kit programme.
Palmarès
World Superbike riders' champion 2013 (Sykes) and 2015–2020 (Rea, six consecutive — the series record), with manufacturers' titles across the span and over 100 race wins for Rea alone; Endurance World Championship titles and Bol d'Or victories; BSB and MotoAmerica championships — the modern superbike era's densest trophy cabinet.
What to check before you buy
Identify the exact generation and whether the base is an RR homologation model — race-part interchange and BoP-era eligibility follow the variant, not the badge. A genuine kit ECU and loom (Kawasaki's or Magneti Marelli per series) is a large fraction of a race bike's value; verify software access transfers with the sale. Check engine hours since refresh, crash records against frame/cases, and for ex-professional bikes insist on the team's spares package and data history — without them you're buying a fast track bike at racer prices.
Did you know
- Rea's six straight titles included 2019's comeback against Álvaro Bautista's Ducati after losing the first eleven races — rated among racing's great psychological victories.
- KRT's WSBK budget decision came after Kawasaki left MotoGP in 2009 — the only manufacturer to prove the 'production racing first' strategy at championship level for a decade.
- The ZX-10RR's homologation run included titanium Pankl con-rods from the factory — road-legal parts specified purely so the race team could rev higher.
