The Silvia family — S13, S14, S15 and their 180SX/240SX siblings — is professional drifting's universal chassis: SR20DET turbo power, perfect steering geometry and thirty years of aftermarket, from D1's founding grids to today's Formula Drift.
History
Nissan built the S13 Silvia (1988) as a stylish commuter coupé; Japan's drift scene discovered that its front-strut, multilink-rear balance, generous steering angle and torquey SR20DET turbo made it the ideal sideways tool. Through the S14's wider stance and the S15's refinement (1999, Japan-market Spec-R with six-speed and helical LSD), the S-chassis became the discipline's standard equipment: cheap in period, endlessly modifiable, forgiving at the limit yet capable at the top level.
Professional history bears it out: D1 Grand Prix's early championships were S-chassis-heavy, and the platform has never left the podium fight anywhere — Formula Drift champions have run S14s and S15s deep into the 2020s (often V8-swapped in America, SR- or 2JZ-powered elsewhere), while every national series' privateer midfield remains built on them.
The market has followed drift culture's ascent: clean unmodified Silvias — especially S15 Spec-Rs, now import-legal in more countries — have become JDM collectibles, while purpose-built competition cars trade on build spec and crash honesty. The S-chassis today is three markets in one: collector coupé, club drift default, and pro-level platform.

What to check before you buy
Separate collector cars from competition tools: on street/collector Silvias, rust (sills, rear arches, strut towers), accident history via Japanese auction sheets, and SR20DET originality set values — unmodified S15 Spec-Rs top the market. On drift builds, judge the cage (certified vs cosmetic), steering-angle kit quality, subframe/chassis-rail straightness after wall contact, and drivetrain spec honesty (SR vs swapped). Every S-chassis has been sideways; assume repairs and price the quality of them, not their absence. On imports, matching chassis and engine paperwork against Japanese export records avoids the cloned-identity cars that occasionally surface, and a compression test on any SR20DET is ten minutes that regularly saves four figures.
