Odyssey PC680 battery
The Odyssey PC680 is the race paddock's lead-acid holdout: the compact AGM battery whose vibration-proof, any-orientation reliability made it the pre-lithium standard — and keeps it the rules-bound and budget build's default.
History
EnerSys's Odyssey line brought military-and-aviation AGM (absorbed glass mat) technology to motorsport's battery problem, and the PC680 became the icon: a compact, sealed unit whose pure-lead thin-plate construction survives vibration that kills flooded batteries, mounts in any orientation (the sealed chemistry's gift to packaging), delivers the cranking bursts race engines demand, and tolerates the deep-cycle abuse of paddock electrics — the specification that made it kit-car, race-saloon and rally builds' default for two decades.
The lithium era repositioned rather than retired it: where lithium's weight savings rule unrestricted builds, the PC680 holds the ground lithium can't — series whose rules require lead-acid or restrict chemistry, budget builds priced under lithium's premium, and the reliability-conservative tier (endurance racers and travellers) that values AGM's charging tolerance and cold behaviour over the last ten kilograms.
Used PC680s trade as modest commodity electricals: age by date code, capacity by load test (AGM degrades gracefully but measurably), terminal and case condition — with new pricing accessible enough that used serves only the genuinely frugal.

Cranking club racing, rally and kit-car grids for two decades as the pre-lithium standard — the AGM record: cold mornings started, vibration survived and paddocks powered without drama.
What to check before you buy
Chemistry-rules check first: some series mandate or favour lead-acid — the PC680's continued relevance is partly regulatory; know your rulebook. Then commodity-battery law: date code (AGM ages by calendar), load-test capacity (graceful degradation still degrades), terminal condition and case integrity. Charging discipline matters — AGM wants proper charge profiles; a battery's history of dumb chargers shortens its future. Against lithium the trade is weight-versus-cost-versus-rules; against cheaper AGMs the Odyssey premium buys the pure-lead construction's actual longevity. Used only cheap and load-tested; new is rational at this price tier.
Did you know
- The PC680's any-orientation mounting liberated packaging a generation before lithium — sealed AGM chemistry letting builders hide batteries where space was, not where acid demanded.
- Military-aviation lineage is the construction's actual pedigree — thin-plate pure lead engineered for airframe vibration found race cars easy.
- Rules-mandated lead-acid keeps the PC680 current in the lithium era — the rare component whose market longevity is partly written in rulebooks.
