Radical SR1

The SR1 is Radical's front door: a 182 hp, 490 kg entry prototype built around the SR1 Cup — the factory's own novice championship with coaching included — and the cheapest genuine downforce racing sold new anywhere.

History

Radical designed the SR1 in 2012 to solve club racing's recruitment problem: give newcomers a real sports-prototype — spaceframe, wings and diffuser, sequential paddle box, Hayabusa-derived RPE engine — at kit-car money, then wrap it in a turnkey championship. The SR1 Cup formula bundled the car, coaching, licence progression and arrive-and-drive support, deliberately turning track-day drivers into racers within a season.

The recipe has run continuously since: SR1 Cup grids in the UK feed Radical's SR3 ladders (and its North American Cup pyramid), the 2022 SR1 XXR update refreshed engine and detail spec, and schools and academies worldwide adopted the model as their prototype trainer.

As a used purchase the SR1 is the definition of honest: hundreds built, spec frozen by Cup rules so obsolescence is glacial, consumables priced for beginners, and resale liquid because every season mints new entrants needing cars. It gives away outright pace to the SR3 but teaches identical craft — which is exactly the point, and why paddock advice to newcomers so often begins with the same three characters.

Palmarès

Radical SR1 Cup champions every season since 2013 — the roll call of the UK's dedicated novice-prototype title — with parallel Cup and academy classes in North America and Europe; countless graduates populate SR3 Challenge and GT grids, the series' real trophy.

What to check before you buy

Cup-spec compliance is the value: an SR1 legal for the current season's Cup (correct engine seal, spec dampers, updated safety items) sells fast; modified cars price as track toys. Check the RPE engine's hours against the generous entry-spec rebuild schedule, gearbox and paddle actuation, and chassis records with Radical for crash history — novice series bend cars, and the factory documents repairs. School and academy fleet cars have hard but professionally maintained lives, often the best-documented buys. The dealer network handles inspections; use the Cup paddock itself for comparables.

Did you know

  • The SR1 Cup was designed so a novice could go from first test to race licence to grid inside one winter — Radical sold the pathway, not just the car.
  • SR1 lap times around UK circuits routinely beat GT4 machinery costing four times as much — downforce democracy in action.
  • Radical's academies run SR1 fleets on multiple continents, making it one of the most-driven prototype designs of its generation by seat-hours.
