Van Diemen RF92 (Formula Ford)
The Van Diemen RF92 represents Formula Ford's golden craft: the wingless, treaded-tyre schooling formula at its 1990s peak, from the Norfolk constructor that dominated FF1600 grids worldwide and taught a generation including the era's future F1 champions.
History
Formula Ford 1600 — no wings, no slicks, a production Kent engine — was motorsport's great equalizer from 1967 onward, and Van Diemen became its Ford of constructors: Ralph Firman's Snetterton operation built more customer single-seaters than anyone in the world through the 1980s and 90s. The RF92 sits mid-dynasty, a steel-spaceframe car refined by decades of iteration, its handling window designed to reward — and teach — throttle-and-slip car control.
The roll of honour explains the reverence: Senna's 1981 RF81 season began the lineage's legend, and through the 80s and 90s Van Diemens carried Schumacher-era juniors, Jenson Button (1998 Festival winner in the successor RF98 line) and countless professionals through their first car seasons. The Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch — the formula's world final — became a near-private Van Diemen benefit for long stretches.
Today FF1600 thrives as both historic and current racing: pre-93 classes, national championships in Britain and Ireland, and the enduring Festival keep RF92-era cars racing hard. With Kent engines rebuilt everywhere and spares remanufactured at scale, the RF92 is arguably the most cost-honest way into real single-seater racing that exists.
Palmarès
Van Diemen's FF1600 record spans dozens of British, Irish and European championships and a majority share of Formula Ford Festival wins across the 80s–90s; RF92-generation cars took national titles on three continents, and the marque's alumni ladder — Senna to Button — made 'ex-Van Diemen' the junior CV's most bankable line.
What to check before you buy
Chassis identity via the RF-number and logbooks is straightforward — the FF1600 community documents cars well. Inspect the spaceframe for crash repairs and rust at the front bay and engine mounts, verify the Kent engine's builder (a fresh unit from a name builder is a third of the car's value) and gearbox type (Hewland Mk9). Class eligibility matters: pre-93 classes reward originality, so period-correct uprights and bodywork add value. Buy on preparation quality — a mid-pack RF92 from a professional stable beats a 'fast' unknown every time.
Did you know
- Formula Ford's treaded tyres and zero downforce make it the last formula where drafting and corner-speed craft decide races — F1 team scouts still attend the Festival for exactly that reason.
- Van Diemen at its peak built over 200 cars a year in Norfolk — more single-seaters annually than some F1 grids' constructors combined ever made.
- The Kent engine that powers FF1600 debuted in 1959 — the formula has kept a road engine block racing for over six decades.
