Rebellion R13 (LMP1)

The fastest privateer of LMP1's final act: Oreca built the Gibson-powered R13 for Rebellion Racing, and it beat Toyota's hybrids outright at Shanghai 2019 and COTA 2020, took Le Mans podiums in 2018 and 2020, then raced on as the Alpine A480 Hypercar.

History

Rebellion Racing returned to LMP1 for the 2018–19 WEC Super Season with a car commissioned from Oreca: the R13, a non-hybrid prototype sharing much of its architecture with the Oreca 07 LMP2 but drawn to LMP1 dimensions and aero freedom. Gibson's naturally aspirated 4.5-litre GL458 V8 gave ~665 hp at an 833 kg minimum — the Equivalence of Technology formula meant to keep privateers within sight of Toyota's hybrids after Audi and Porsche left.

It worked better than most expected. The R13 inherited a 1–2 at Silverstone 2018 when both Toyotas were excluded, finished third overall at Le Mans that June, and — once the 2019–20 season's success handicaps bit — beat the TS050s on the road at Shanghai 2019 and COTA 2020 with Senna, Menezes and Nato. Second overall at Le Mans 2020 was the team's farewell.

Rebellion withdrew from motorsport in 2020, but the design did not retire: rebadged Alpine A480 and grandfathered into the new Hypercar class, it kept scoring world-championship podiums with Signatech through 2022. Only a handful of tubs exist, none has traded publicly, and historic grids for final-generation LMP1 are still forming — for now it is a collection-and-demonstration car with Oreca support behind it.

Palmarès

Outright WEC wins at Silverstone 2018 (both Toyotas excluded), Shanghai 2019 and COTA 2020 (Senna/Menezes/Nato); third overall at Le Mans 2018 (Laurent/Beche/Menezes) and second overall in 2020; as the Alpine A480, third overall at Le Mans 2021 and a Hypercar title fight with Toyota through 2022.

What to check before you buy

There is no open market: Oreca built only a handful of R13 tubs, Rebellion ran two cars, and the chassis that became Alpine A480s carry that identity in their papers — chassis plates, Oreca build records and WEC entry lists must reconcile before any money moves. The Gibson GL458 is a known quantity — Gibson Technology rebuilds them on fixed-hour schedules — and heavy parts commonality with the Oreca 07 keeps consumables obtainable, but ECU, hydraulics and systems support means budgeting for Oreca involvement to run one at all. No established historic grid yet accepts final-era LMP1; expect a discreet broker or team-disposal sale, priced as a museum piece with racing potential.

Did you know

  • Rebellion skipped straight from its R-One to 'R13', deliberately adopting the number most teams refuse to run — an on-brand provocation from a Swiss watchmaker that traded on rebellion.
  • The R13's first WEC win came without leading on merit: both Toyota TS050s were excluded at Silverstone 2018 for flexing front skid blocks, handing Rebellion a 1–2 finish.
  • Under the LMP1 bodywork sits close kinship with Oreca's 07 LMP2 — Oreca designed and built the R13, which is why spares and support outlived Rebellion's own 2020 exit from racing.
