Xtrac gearbox

Xtrac is motorsport transmission's top table: the Thatcham engineering house whose gearboxes run in Formula 1, WRC, IndyCar, Le Mans Hypercar and every LMP3 — when a used race car lists an Xtrac, it lists provenance in metal.

History

Mike Endean founded Xtrac in 1984 out of rallycross innovation, and the Thatcham company climbed motorsport's entire ladder: WRC transmissions through the Group A and World Rally Car eras, Formula 1 supply relationships across multiple teams, spec-series contracts (IndyCar's gearbox, LMP2/LMP3 spec units, touring car programmes) and today's Le Mans Hypercar and Formula E work — a breadth no transmission rival matches.

The engineering culture is the brand: in-house gear manufacture to aerospace tolerances, integrated hydraulics and shift systems, and the spec-contract discipline of building hundreds of identical units that survive customer racing's abuse. For the paddock, 'Xtrac' on a spec sheet reads as the sport's premium default.

On the used market Xtrac units travel inside the cars they were built for: LMP3's spec 6-speed, P2 units, touring-car and rally boxes — with factory and licensed-specialist rebuild paths defining serviceability. Standalone units surface from retired programmes and hold value precisely because the rebuild network is corporate rather than cottage: parts and knowledge persist as long as the category does.

World Championships and classic wins across WRC (Group A to WRC2), Formula 1 supply eras, IndyCar (series spec gearbox including Indy 500s), Le Mans prototypes from LMP3 spec units to Hypercar — the broadest championship portfolio in racing transmissions.

What to check before you buy

Spec-series units are the accessible market: LMP3/P2 and touring-car Xtracs follow category rebuild schedules — verify hours against the series' mandated intervals, the last rebuild's provenance (factory or licensed specialist only; internals are not generic dog-box fare) and the unit's category legality seals where applicable. Standalone ex-works rally/F1 units are collector-adjacent: glorious, but parts access depends on Xtrac's goodwill per project — confirm before buying a display piece you hoped to run. In-car, an Xtrac with current papers adds real resale weight; budget its next scheduled rebuild into any offer.

Did you know

  • Xtrac began with a rallycross 4WD conversion for a Ford Escort — from one clever driveline to Formula 1 supply within a decade.
  • The company builds IndyCar's entire spec gearbox supply — every car in the Indy 500 shifts through the same Thatcham engineering.
  • Xtrac's apprentice scheme is legendarily oversubscribed — gear-cutting at their tolerance is one of UK motorsport's scarcest crafts.
