Ligier JS P3 (LMP3)
The Ligier JS P3 was the car that made LMP3 work: the first-generation class best-seller with over 160 built, winner of the inaugural ELMS and Le Mans Cup titles, and still the most affordable entry into genuine prototype racing.
History
When the ACO created LMP3 in 2015 as the closed-cockpit bottom rung of the Le Mans ladder — spec Nissan VK56 V8, cost-capped carbon chassis — Onroak Automotive's Ligier JS P3 defined the category: first to market, first to win, and soon the overwhelming fleet majority, with over 160 chassis built in the first generation. The recipe was deliberately accessible: 420 hp of torquey naturally aspirated V8, an X-trac sequential, forgiving aero and running costs closer to GT4 than to LMP2.
The JS P3 won the inaugural ELMS LMP3 title (2015) and dominated the new Michelin Le Mans Cup, Asian Le Mans Series and IMSA Prototype Challenge grids through the generation's life, sharing the class with Norma and Ginetta rivals it consistently outsold.
When the P320 second generation arrived (2020, 455 hp spec engine), the JS P3 fleet cascaded into club prototype racing — Britcar, Sports Prototype Cup, Ultimate Cup, track-day prototype programmes — where it remains the value benchmark: real Le Mans-ladder machinery, spec parts still supplied, at prices below a new GT4 car.
Palmarès
Inaugural ELMS LMP3 champion 2015; Michelin Le Mans Cup titles and the majority of race wins 2016–2019; Asian Le Mans Series LMP3 crowns; IMSA Prototype Challenge championships; Road to Le Mans support-race wins at the 24 Hours — the first LMP3 generation's dominant record by fleet and by silverware.
What to check before you buy
The chassis file from Ligier/Onroak (crash history, tub repairs) and the VK56's hours against the spec-engine schedule are the two documents that price a JS P3. Check gearbox rebuild timing, floor and splitter condition (kerb damage is the class tax), and which update state the car carries — some were converted toward P320 aero for specific series, affecting eligibility. Spec parts remain available through Ligier's network, keeping the ownership case honest. Series-ready cars with current safety items and data systems outprice stored examples by real margins; the club-prototype grids they now race in are the natural due-diligence paddock.
Did you know
- Onroak named Ligier's modern prototypes 'JS' for Jo Schlesser, Guy Ligier's friend killed at Rouen in 1968 — every JS P3 carries the initials.
- LMP3's spec Nissan VK56 is a development of a production SUV engine — deliberately chosen so a prototype class could run on light-truck durability.
- With 160+ first-generation cars, the JS P3 outsold every LMP2 chassis of its era combined — the widest prototype fleet since Sports 2000's heyday.
