Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport
The 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport is the smart first step into real GT racing: a factory-built, globally homologated GT4 car with Porsche parts logistics behind it, hundreds of grid places to race in, and the strongest resale ecosystem in the class.
History
Porsche created the Cayman GT4 Clubsport in 2016 on the 981 platform and rebuilt it on the 718 for 2019. The concept is disarmingly simple: the mid-engined Cayman's balance, a 3.8-litre (425 hp) flat-six from the 911 family, the PDK gearbox with racing calibration — no clutch pedal, no dogbox drama — and a welded cage with FIA GT4 homologation, all delivered race-ready from Weissach.
The 718 generation introduced two trims — Trackday for private lapping and Competition for racing — and pioneered series production use of natural-fibre composite body panels (flax-based doors and wing), an early sustainability statement in customer racing. A 2022 RS-based Clubsport variant added power and aero for the top of the class.
As GT4 exploded into the world's default entry GT category, the Cayman became its volume seller: GT4 European Series, SRO's national GT4 championships, IMSA's Michelin Pilot Challenge, the Nürburgring's Cayman-heavy classes and countless club series run wall-to-wall Clubsports. That production scale is the buyer's friend — parts are stocked like road-car components, and every setup and failure mode is documented across a thousand-car fleet.
Palmarès
The model's record spans class wins in the Nürburgring 24 Hours' Cayman classes, GT4 European Series and national GT4 titles across Europe, Michelin Pilot Challenge championships in North America, and Dubai/24H Series GT4 class victories — the classic profile of a car that wins everywhere its class exists rather than in one halo event.
What to check before you buy
PDK health is the first check: the gearbox is robust but calibration and clutch-pack life should be documented through Porsche Motorsport service records. Verify Trackday vs Competition trim (ABS/aero/fuel-cell differences matter for homologation), engine hours against the generous rebuild schedule, and accident history via the crash-tube and floor inspection any Porsche motorsport partner can perform. The natural-fibre panels are consumables — check spares inventory. Ex-series cars with fresh homologation life command a premium over track-day-only cars of identical age.
Did you know
- The 718 Clubsport's flax-fibre body panels made it the first series-production race car with natural-fibre composites — the material later spread to other Porsche customer products.
- Because the car uses PDK rather than a sequential dogbox, gearbox running costs are a fraction of typical GT4 rivals' — a deliberate Porsche selling point.
- At several Nürburgring 24 Hours more than 20 Cayman Clubsports have started across classes, out-numbering some entire manufacturer line-ups.
