Honda Civic Type R TCR

JAS Motorsport's Civic Type R TCR is one of the defining cars of the TCR formula across three generations (FK2, FK8, FL5): a front-driver that has won WTCR races, TCR series on four continents and a long list of 24-hour TCR classes.

History

When the TCR category rebooted customer touring car racing in 2015 — production-based turbocharged 2-litre cars, cost caps, Balance of Performance — Honda's long-time partner JAS Motorsport in Milan was among the first with a serious contender. The FK2-generation Civic TCR won immediately in TCR International; the FK8 of 2018 matured the package with a stiffer shell, better aero and a safety cell that became a class benchmark; the current FL5-based car carries the line into the TCR World Tour era.

The recipe is the formula's essence: the K20C turbo engine tuned to roughly 340 hp, a proper sequential racing gearbox, front-wheel drive managed by a hydraulic limited-slip differential, and controlled aero. JAS builds every car in Milan and supports customers with the spares-and-engineering model of a small factory team.

The Civic's speciality has been endurance TCR: the model owns a dense record in the 24H Series, Nürburgring TCR class and IMSA's touring classes, where Honda reliability plus JAS build quality tell over long distances. With three generations circulating, the used ladder runs from frontline FL5s to bargain FK2s ideal for club endurance.

Palmarès

Highlights include WTCR race wins across multiple seasons (Girolami, Guerrieri, Monteiro), TCR Europe, TCR Australia and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge titles, Nürburgring 24 Hours TCR class wins, and repeated 24H Series class championships — plus a stack of national TCR crowns from Denmark to Japan.

What to check before you buy

Confirm the generation and the exact homologation the car carries — BoP hardware and aero differ by season, and series eligibility follows the homologation sheet, not the bodyshell. JAS service records are the provenance backbone; ask for gearbox rebuild timing (the sequential is the main scheduled cost) and turbo/engine hours. Inspect the front subframe and radiator pack for contact damage — TCR racing is physical — and check the diff's service history. An FK8 with fresh homologation life remains the value pick for most national grids.

Did you know

  • JAS Motorsport also built Honda's Super Touring Accords and the NSX GT3 — the Civic TCR continues a Honda-JAS partnership dating to the mid-1990s.
  • The FK8 TCR's safety cell performed so well in a high-profile WTCR accident at the Nürburgring Nordschleife that JAS published the case study.
  • TCR rules ban carbon tubs and exotic materials — the Civic's speed comes from geometry and damping, which is why setup books travel with cars at sale.
