Bentley Continental GT3
Bentley's Continental GT3 turned a 2.3-tonne grand tourer into a genuine GT3 front-runner across two generations (2014, 2018), winning Blancpain titles and the Bathurst 12 Hour before the factory programme closed in 2020.
History
Bentley's return to racing after its 2003 Le Mans win took shape in 2013 with M-Sport in Cumbria: the first Continental GT3 shed some 800 kg from the road car through an all-out carbon-and-aluminium diet, keeping the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (shared with Audi) in dry-sump racing trim. The sight of a Bentley on GT3 grids — visibly enormous next to a 911 — became one of the category's great spectacles, and the car was quick immediately, winning at Silverstone in its first full Blancpain season.
The second-generation car of 2018 rebuilt the concept on the new Continental's lighter MSB platform, with better weight distribution, refined aero and updated electronics. Factory Team M-Sport campaigns ran alongside customer operations (K-PAX in America, CMR, Bentley Team Parker) until Bentley ended factory GT3 involvement after 2020, leaving parts support to M-Sport channels.
On the used market the Continental GT3 is a character buy with real results behind it: eligible for many national GT3 and GT 'legends' grids, imposing on track, and — because fleet size was modest — increasingly collectible as the only racing Bentley generation between the Speed 8 era and the brand's electrified future.
Palmarès
Highlights include Blancpain GT Series Sprint titles (2015 with Maximilian Buhk/Vincent Abril), the 2020 Bathurst 12 Hour victory, wins in Blancpain/GTWC Endurance rounds, British GT race wins, and Intercontinental GT Challenge campaigns that made the big Bentley a fixture at Spa, Suzuka and Kyalami — plus California 8 Hours success with K-PAX.
What to check before you buy
Parts flow through M-Sport rather than a factory customer-racing department, so before buying, verify current supply and pricing for your region — most consumables remain available, but lead times exceed Porsche/AMG norms. Check which generation and update state the car carries (2018 cars had seasonal evo kits), V8 hours against the rebuild schedule, and the enormous carbon bodywork for repair quality: panels are model-specific and costly. A car with a spares package and M-Sport history file is worth a real premium; orphaned cars without documentation trade at a visible discount.
Did you know
- The GT3 weighed around 1,300 kg — nearly a tonne less than the road Continental GT it was carved from.
- Bentley's 2020 Bathurst win came in the programme's final year, sealing the only 12 Hour victory ever taken by the marque.
- The first-generation car's V8 was so understressed in racing trim that some customer engines ran multiple seasons between rebuilds.
