BMW M4 GT3
BMW's M4 GT3 replaced the M6 GT3 in 2022, built around the P58 turbocharged straight-six and an explicit design brief of lower running costs and friendlier limit behaviour. It became a DTM and IMSA GTD title winner within its first two seasons.
History
BMW M Motorsport developed the M4 GT3 through 2020–21 with an unusually public emphasis on the customer business case: the car was designed for longer rebuild intervals, faster crash repairs (bolt-on front and rear structures) and a cockpit built around Pro-Am reality, including an air-conditioned interior and a centre console designed with sim-racing input for control logic.
The P58 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six is closely related to the road M4's S58, detuned by regulation but massively torque-rich, driving through an Xtrac sequential transaxle. Aerodynamically the car follows the modern school — swan-neck wing, big diffuser, stable underfloor — with the M4's controversial road-car grille integrated into a genuinely functional cooling concept.
The car took over from the M6 GT3 across BMW's customer network (Rowe, Schubert, RMG, Turner, Paul Miller and others) in GTWC, DTM, NLS and IMSA. A GT3 Evo followed for 2025 with revised aero and detail improvements, but the original M4 GT3 remains the volume car of BMW's GT customer programme and a reference for total-cost-of-ownership in the class.
Palmarès
Early-life highlights include the 2022 DTM title with Sheldon van der Linde (Schubert Motorsport), IMSA GTD championships with Paul Miller Racing (2023 GTD, then GTD Pro success), Nürburgring 24 Hours victory with Rowe Racing (2023), Spa 24 Hours podiums, and national GT titles across Europe and Asia — a dense first-three-seasons record for a new GT3 design.
What to check before you buy
BMW's bolt-on crash structure philosophy means accident history is less scary than on welded-front rivals — but demand the M Motorsport repair documentation anyway, because geometry checks matter. Engine and gearbox life reports come from BMW by serial number; the P58's intervals are long, which is priced into used values. Confirm whether the car has 2024-onward update kits and, if you're targeting 2025+ grids, how it sits relative to the Evo homologation. The AC system and driver-cooling spec vary by market; endurance buyers should verify which package is fitted.
Did you know
- BMW used professional sim racers during development to refine the steering-wheel control layout before the first physical prototype ran.
- The M4 GT3's air conditioning was a headline feature — BMW advertised cockpit temperatures 10°C lower than the M6 GT3's at the Nürburgring 24h.
- Rowe's 2023 N24 win made the M4 GT3 the third different BMW model to win the race in the modern GT3 era, after the Z4 and M6.
