Audi R8 LMS GT3 evo II

The evo II is the final development of Audi's R8 LMS GT3 line, closing a family that defined customer GT racing from 2009 onward with five Nürburgring 24 Hours and three Spa 24 Hours victories, and the last new customer car of Audi Sport's GT3 era.

History

Audi Sport customer racing effectively industrialized the GT3 category: the first R8 LMS of 2009 proved a road-supercar platform could be raced by privateers at scale, and successive generations (ultra 2012, second-generation 2015, evo 2019) refined the same recipe — the Lamborghini-shared aluminium spaceframe, the gloriously linear 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10, and running costs kept deliberately low with around fifty percent road-car parts.

The evo II of 2022 concentrated on the details that decide modern GT3 races: recalibrated traction control with finer maps, revised dampers and kinematics for tyre life, improved cooling for hot-climate endurance rounds, and LED light upgrades for night racing. It was, by Audi's own framing, a car optimized for Pro-Am crews and 24-hour reliability rather than headline pace.

With Audi Sport winding down customer racing programmes mid-decade, the evo II became the last of the line — and the used market noticed: the model's parts commonality across a fifteen-year family, plus the V10's reputation for going long between rebuilds, keeps demand solid for national GT series, endurance trophies and GT track programmes worldwide.

The R8 LMS family's honours include five Nürburgring 24 Hours outright wins, three Spa 24 Hours, two Bathurst 12 Hours, Daytona 24 GTD class wins and dozens of championships; the evo II itself added N24 podiums, GTWC race wins, ADAC GT Masters and national titles in Europe and Asia before Audi's customer programme wound down.

What to check before you buy

The V10's rebuild intervals are the longest-standing selling point — but only Audi Sport's (now partner-network) hour reports prove where a given engine sits. Confirm evo II specification versus an evo carrying update kits; genuine evo IIs have distinct damper and TC hardware. Spaceframe repairs are well understood and documented through Audi's crash-repair jigs, so ask for the file rather than fearing history. With the factory programme ended, check current parts channels for your region — supply remains good through former Audi Sport partners, but lead times vary by market.
