BMW Z4 GT3

The Z4 GT3 was BMW's customer star of the early GT3 boom: a V8-swapped roadster-silhouette coupé that won the 2011 Dubai 24 Hour on debut year form, the Spa 24 podiums and the 2013 Nürburgring pole era before the M6 succeeded it.

History

BMW Motorsport's first purpose-built GT3 took an unlikely base: the E89 Z4 coupé silhouette, stretched over the P65 4.4-litre V8 derived from the M3 GT2's engine family, with a six-speed sequential transaxle for balance. The result was compact, agile and unmistakable — the long-bonnet roadster shape against the era's Audis and Mercedes made it a fan favourite immediately.

Customer teams did the winning: Schubert Motorsport's Dubai 24 Hour victories (2011, and again later), the works-supported N24 campaigns that put Z4s on pole and podium at the Nürburgring, Blancpain sprint and endurance wins with Marc VDS — whose 2015 Spa 24 near-misses and 2016-adjacent successes bookended the model's front-line life — and national GT titles from Germany to Japan's Super GT300 class.

Retired by the M6 GT3 in 2016, the Z4 aged into exactly what smart buyers seek: a proven, parts-supported GT3 with BMW Motorsport documentation, welcome in national GT series' second divisions, GT Cup classes and the emerging GT3 'legends' grids — at a fraction of its original list. The V8's appetite for revs and the chassis' friendliness keep it a gentleman-driver favourite.

Palmarès

Dubai 24 Hour overall winner 2011 (Schubert); Nürburgring 24 Hours podiums and pole positions 2013–2015; Blancpain Endurance and Sprint race wins with Marc VDS including Spa 24 front-running years; ADAC GT Masters race wins; Super GT300 class title (2014, Studie/BMW Sports Trophy) — the customer-programme record that set up BMW's GT3 line.

What to check before you buy

BMW Motorsport chassis files document every Z4 GT3 — verify build number, update state (2013's aero/engine evo matters) and crash history through them. The P65 V8's rebuild intervals are documented and the engine is the model's reliability anchor; the transaxle and paddle system carry the scheduled costs. Check the long front splitter and floor for the kerb damage this low car collects, and which electronics generation is fitted. Ex-Schubert/Marc VDS provenance adds real value. Parts still flow through BMW's classic-motorsport channels — but confirm availability windows for your region before campaigning seriously.

Did you know

  • The Z4 GT3's P65 V8 displaced 4.4 litres in a car whose road sibling never offered more than a six — homologation's generous interpretation at its finest.
  • Marc VDS' Z4 era produced some of Spa's most agonizing near-misses before eventual triumphs — the team's engineering notes on the car became GT3 paddock folklore.
  • In Japan's Super GT300 the Z4 fought hybrid prototypes and Mother Chassis specials — and won a title anyway, the model's most exotic championship.
