Chevrolet Corvette C8.R

The C8.R is the first mid-engined racing Corvette: Pratt Miller's GTE-era swansong won the 2020 IMSA GTLM championship in its debut season and carried the factory yellow cars into the GT3 age that succeeded them.

History

When Chevrolet finally moved the Corvette's engine behind the driver for the C8 road car, Pratt Miller's racing version followed for 2020: the C8.R, built to GTE/GTLM rules around a new 5.5-litre naturally aspirated flat-plane-crank V8 — an engine developed race-first, years before its road-going Z06 twin appeared. The layout ended two decades of front-engined factory Corvettes stretching back through the C7.R to the 1999 C5-R.

The debut season delivered immediately: Corvette Racing took the 2020 IMSA GTLM drivers', teams' and manufacturers' championships (Garcia/Taylor), added the 2021 titles, and campaigned the WEC's final GTE-Am seasons after GTLM wound down — collecting class silverware at Sebring, Daytona and across both championships, though the Le Mans class win that decorated its predecessors eluded it.

The C8.R closed the factory GTE story in 2023 as the customer-facing Corvette Z06 GT3.R — again Pratt Miller-built — took over. The handful of true C8.R chassis are factory property or carefully placed collector cars; their real marketplace legacy is the halo they cast over the wider racing-Corvette market, from C5-R/C6.R historics to GT3 customer cars.

IMSA GTLM drivers', teams' and manufacturers' champion 2020 and 2021 (Garcia/Taylor era) with class wins at Sebring, Road Atlanta's Petit Le Mans and the Rolex 24; WEC GTE-Am campaign wins in 2022–23; runner-up finishes in Le Mans' GTE classes — the final championship chapter of the factory GTE Corvettes.

What to check before you buy

Genuine C8.R race chassis rarely trade: they route through GM/Pratt Miller placement to museums and vetted collectors, with full team history files. If one is offered, verification through Pratt Miller is the entire transaction — chassis number, crash log, engine provenance (the 5.5 flat-plane units are factory-controlled). For buyers wanting a racing mid-engined Corvette to actually campaign, the Z06 GT3.R customer programme is the realistic channel, with the C8.R as the collector tier above it. Treat any 'C8.R' without factory paperwork as a conversion, priced accordingly.

Did you know

  • The C8.R's flat-plane 5.5 V8 ran at Daytona in January 2020 — some two years before customers could buy its road version in the Z06.
  • Corvette Racing's 2020 title came in the pandemic-shortened season where the C8.R won five of nine GTLM rounds on debut — a first-year record no GTE rival matched.
  • The famous yellow works livery dates to 1999's C5-R; the C8.R was the first to render it over a mid-engined silhouette, to initial fan uproar and eventual embrace.
