Ford GT (race, 2016 GTE)
The second-generation Ford GT was built to race first: Ford and Multimatic's carbon-tub GTE won the GTE-Pro class at Le Mans in 2016 — fifty years after the 1966 sweep — before a four-season works programme closed the type's competition career.
History
Ford conceived the 2016 GT programme backwards from a date: Le Mans 2016, the fiftieth anniversary of the GT40's 1-2-3. Multimatic engineered a carbon monocoque supercar whose road version existed substantially to homologate the racer — 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-turbo V6, extreme aero-first packaging with flying buttresses and narrow fuselage, and a GTE car developed alongside the road car rather than after it.
The gamble landed: at Le Mans 2016 the #68 Ganassi-run GT won GTE-Pro against Ferrari's 488 in a race-long fight, with the sister cars completing the statement. The four-season works programme (IMSA and WEC, 2016–2019) added the Rolex 24 and Sebring class wins, IMSA GTLM race victories and WEC podiums before Ford closed the campaign as planned.
The race cars' afterlife is collector territory: chassis are documented by Multimatic, several were placed with significant collections, and the emerging GTE 'Endurance Legends' grids give them a competition future. Meanwhile the road GT's value trajectory — allocation-controlled, appreciation-heavy — keeps the whole family among the most watched modern Fords in the marketplace.
Palmarès
Le Mans GTE-Pro winner 2016 (#68 Hand/Müller/Bourdais); IMSA GTLM class wins including the Rolex 24 at Daytona (2017) and Sebring; WEC GTE-Pro race wins and podiums across the 2016–19 superseasons; IMSA GTLM title challenges through the programme's four factory years.
What to check before you buy
Race chassis route through Multimatic's records — provenance, crash history and engine status (EcoBoost race units are programme-controlled) come from the source or not at all. The 2016 Le Mans-connected cars are museum-tier; later-season chassis trade quietly among GTE collectors, increasingly with Endurance Legends eligibility as the selling point. Budget factory-adjacent support: the electronics and hybrid-free but complex systems assume professional operation. For the road GT, Ford's original allocation contracts and continuous history dominate value — and conversions or clones of either version price as what they are.
Did you know
- Ford revealed the road GT in 2015 without confirming the racing programme — the Le Mans entry everyone suspected was announced only months later, dates already circled.
- The #68's 2016 Le Mans win came exactly 50 years after the 1966 sweep — a symmetry Ford's marketing had bet the entire programme on.
- The GT's teardrop fuselage is so narrow the V6 exhausts route through the flying buttresses — aero packaging the road car inherited from the race car, not vice versa.
