Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R
The Camaro GT4.R is Pratt Miller's customer-racing Chevrolet: a naturally aspirated V8 GT4 built by the Corvette Racing constructor, a fixture of IMSA's Michelin Pilot Challenge and the muscle-car voice of the GT4 category worldwide.
History
Chevrolet entered the booming GT4 category in 2017 by handing the sixth-generation Camaro to Pratt Miller — the Michigan operation behind every factory Corvette racer since 1999. The GT4.R kept the recipe honest: an LT1-based 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 dry-sumped for racing, an Xtrac six-speed sequential transaxle arrangement adapted to the platform, wide GT4 aero and the heavy-duty consumables philosophy American endurance racing demands.
The car became a Michelin Pilot Challenge GS mainstay with teams like Blackdog Speed Shop and Rebel Rock, collecting race wins and title challenges against Porsche, Mercedes and BMW GT4 machinery, while SRO's Pirelli GT4 America and international GT4 series added European and Asian campaigns. Its BoP-friendly torque delivery and the V8's long rebuild intervals made it a favourite of Am drivers and budget-conscious teams.
With Camaro road production ended, the GT4.R fleet has shifted toward the used market's sweet spot: current homologation life remains (SRO extensions have kept the car eligible), Pratt Miller parts support continues, and pricing sits below equivalent German GT4s — the classic case of buying torque and support over badge prestige.
Palmarès
IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge GS race wins from 2017 onward (Blackdog, Rebel Rock era) with championship-contending seasons; Pirelli GT4 America class victories and SprintX titles; GT4 European Series and international GT4 race wins — the model's record is breadth across every GT4 arena rather than one halo result.
What to check before you buy
Pratt Miller's build records and update history are the provenance spine — confirm the chassis' homologation year and which evo/update kits are fitted, because SRO eligibility windows drive value. The LT1-based V8's rebuild intervals are among the longest in GT4 (a selling point; get the hours in writing), while the Xtrac and dampers carry the scheduled costs. Inspect the front splitter mounts and floor for American-circuit kerb damage. Cars with fresh homologation life and a Pilot Challenge logbook command the premium; end-of-homologation cars are the club-racing value play.
Did you know
- Pratt Miller builds the GT4.R in the same New Hudson shops as the factory Corvettes — customer Camaros share engineering DNA with Le Mans winners.
- The GT4.R's naturally aspirated 6.2 is among the largest engines in the GT4 category — BoP restricts it, but the torque plateau flatters gentleman drivers.
- Several GT4.R chassis have run full seasons without an engine change — rebuild economics German rivals' turbo units cannot match.
