Ford Fiesta R5 / Rally2
M-Sport's Fiesta R5 family democratized modern rally performance: since 2013 the turbocharged, four-wheel-drive Fiesta has been the world's most numerous customer rally car, winning WRC2 titles and national championships on every continent.
History
The R5 formula (renamed Rally2 in 2020) was designed to cap costs while delivering genuine world-class performance: 1.6 turbo engines with control restrictors, five-speed sequential boxes, mechanical differentials only, and price ceilings. M-Sport's Fiesta R5 of 2013 — engineered in Cumbria alongside the works WRC programme — became the formula's volume champion, with hundreds of chassis built and a global support network no rival matched.
The Mk8-based Fiesta Rally2 of 2019 (updated 2021 with the Rally2 EcoBoost evolution) modernized aero, dampers and electronics. Between generations, the Fiesta accumulated the customer-racing statistics that matter: most cars sold, most events entered, and a parts pipeline that can put a nose panel in almost any country inside two days.
The car's real significance is structural: R5/Rally2 became rallying's professional middle class — WRC2, ERC, and dozens of national top classes are effectively Rally2 championships — and the Fiesta's fleet size made it the reference purchase. The used ladder runs deep, from front-line current-spec cars to early R5s now serving club competitors at a third of original cost.
Palmarès
WRC2/WRC2 Pro championship titles and dozens of class wins at WRC events; European Rally Championship victories; national championship titles across Europe, Asia-Pacific, Africa and the Americas — the Fiesta R5/Rally2's aggregate national-title count leads the formula, a record built by hundreds of privateer crews rather than one works team.
What to check before you buy
M-Sport's chassis file is the provenance anchor: build date, update history and crash repairs are all recorded. Key value drivers are the homologation/jokers state (eligibility windows matter for WRC2/ERC entry), engine and transmission hours against schedule, and damper specification (gravel/tarmac kits priced separately). Inspect the front chassis legs and floor for rough-event repairs, and confirm the electronics package generation. Early R5s are superb value but check parts-supersession status — some early components now route through updated part numbers.
Did you know
- M-Sport has built more Fiesta rally cars at Dovenby Hall than any other single rally model produced anywhere since the Escort era.
- The R5's cost-cap philosophy came partly from M-Sport's Malcolm Wilson lobbying the FIA — the company then out-competed everyone in the formula it helped design.
- Fiesta R5s have won events on snow, gravel, tarmac and African rough-road in the same calendar year — fleet ubiquity means the model contests virtually every rally on earth.
