Legend Car (INEX)
The Legend Car is American short-track racing's great equalizer: a 5/8-scale fibreglass coupé over a sealed Yamaha motorcycle engine, governed by INEX rules so strict that over 5,000 racers worldwide compete on preparation, not chequebooks.
History
US Legend Cars International (later 600 Racing) created the Legend Car in 1992 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, with a brief straight from stock-car racing's grass roots: a cheap, spec, cheat-resistant race car dressed as a 1930s–40s American coupé or sedan. The formula — steel tube frame, fibreglass body, sealed Yamaha FZ09-family (originally XJ1250) engine, hard spec tyres — is policed by INEX, the sanctioning body whose claim rules and sealed drivetrains keep the racing about drivers.
The concept scaled like nothing else in club motorsport: ovals and road courses across North America run weekly Legends divisions, Europe, Australia and Asia sanction national series, and the annual Summer Shootout at Charlotte functions as the discipline's crucible. NASCAR's development ladder leans on it — Cup champions from Kyle Busch to Chase Elliott and Joey Logano did formative seasons in Legends.
The used market mirrors the philosophy: thousands of cars circulate at entry-level motorsport prices, spec parts flow from 600 Racing dealers, and a competitive car differs from a backmarker mainly in maintenance discipline — which is exactly what the founders intended.
Palmarès
INEX national and world-final titles across Pro, Masters, Semi-Pro and Young Lions divisions since 1993; Charlotte Summer Shootout championships — short-track America's most watched junior proving ground; and an alumni list of NASCAR Cup champions and winners (Busch, Logano, Elliott among them) unmatched by any other entry formula.
What to check before you buy
INEX legality is the entire purchase: verify the engine seal's integrity and provenance (unsealed engines are practice items), chassis certification tag, and current-rules compliance for body and components — the rulebook updates yearly and 600 Racing dealers confirm status quickly. Check frame straightness after oval contact, steering box and rear-end condition, and which engine generation (XJ/FZ09) the car runs, as series are transitioning. Buy from an active INEX region with the car's logbook and setup notes; a mid-pack car from a known racer beats a shiny unknown, and claims of 'fresh sealed engine' should come with the paperwork INEX issues.
Did you know
- The bodies replicate 1934–1940 American coupés at 5/8 scale because founder Humpy Wheeler wanted modified-era nostalgia cheap enough for anyone — the moulds haven't fundamentally changed since 1992.
- INEX's engine-claim rule lets officials buy a suspect engine on the spot — the cheat-deterrent that has kept the formula honest for three decades.
- Charlotte's Summer Shootout draws hundreds of Legends entries across divisions each summer — a bigger single-discipline turnout than most national championships manage in a season.
