Lola B05/52 (A1GP)
The B05/52 was A1 Grand Prix's spec car: Lola's 520 hp Zytek-powered single-seater that equipped the 'World Cup of Motorsport' from 2005 to 2008 — and now offers ex-international machinery at club-formula money.
History
A1GP's premise — nation-versus-nation racing in identical cars through the northern winter — needed robust, spectacular, equal machinery fast: Lola delivered the B05/52, a carbon monocoque around Zytek's 3.4 V8 (~520 hp, with a push-to-pass boost), six-speed sequential and deliberately durable aero that let the series run 25 national teams' worth of spares logistics.
For three seasons (2005–08) the car carried the championship's memorable era — Nelson Piquet Jr, Nico Hülkenberg's dominant 2006–07 campaign for Germany, Robbie Kerr, Jonny Reid and packed grids from Brands Hatch to Sepang — before the Ferrari-powered 'Powered by Ferrari' car replaced it and the series folded in 2009.
The fleet's afterlife is the buyer's opportunity: B05/52s dispersed into BOSS GP, hillclimbs, track programmes and collections, where they deliver near-GP2 performance with Lola/Zytek support networks still functional. Priced well under equivalent GP2 machinery — the series' collapse orphaned the brand, not the engineering — the B05/52 is the connoisseur's cheap route to serious downforce.
Palmarès
A1GP championship-winning car for France (2005–06, Premat/Duval era), Germany (2006–07, Hülkenberg's nine-win season) and Switzerland (2007–08, Neel Jani); every race of the series' first three seasons across four continents — the complete record of a one-make world championship.
What to check before you buy
Chassis provenance runs through the A1GP fleet records and subsequent BOSS GP/private hands — national-team identity (a 'Team Germany' Hülkenberg-season tub carries collector cachet) is documented and priced. The Zytek V8's rebuild status is the cost anchor; specialists who serviced the series still support the engine. Check gearbox and clutch service, tub crash history from the series' famously physical racing, and spares inventory — orphaned-series ownership lives on parts stock. Cars actively run in BOSS GP-style events, with data and current systems, are worth their premium over garage finds.
Did you know
- A1GP raced in winter deliberately to avoid F1 clashes — drivers treated it as the off-season's best-paid training, which is why future F1 names filled the entry.
- Hülkenberg's 2006–07 A1GP season for Germany yielded nine wins — a campaign so dominant it fast-tracked his F1 trajectory.
- The B05/52's push-to-pass boost predated F1's DRS-era overtaking aids — A1GP marketed it as 'PowerBoost' with a cockpit button counter.
