Dallara GP2/05

The GP2/05 launched the GP2 Series in 2005: the 600 hp Renault-backed spec car in which Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton won the category's first two titles — feeder racing's most consequential debut generation.

History

When GP2 replaced Formula 3000 in 2005, Dallara's GP2/05 defined the new deal: a carbon monocoque passing F1-derived crash tests, Mecachrome's 4.0 V8 at 600 hp, six-speed paddle-shift — sequential shifting new to the feeder level — and running costs capped by spec-part discipline. The car's brief was explicit: make the last step before F1 feel like F1.

Its three championship seasons produced the category's founding legend: Nico Rosberg took the inaugural 2005 title (ART Grand Prix), Lewis Hamilton's crushing 2006 campaign preceded his sensational F1 debut, and 2007 crowned Timo Glock — with race winners including Kubica, Piquet Jr and the generation that filled late-2000s F1 grids. The GP2/08 succeeded it, inheriting a proven formula.

Retired GP2/05s seeded the ex-feeder ecosystem: BOSS GP grids, Auto GP's interim years, hillclimbs and private programmes absorbed the fleet, where the model today offers the Hamilton-era feeder experience at the classic end of GP2 pricing — V8 soundtrack included, running-cost realities identical to its successor.

Palmarès

GP2 Series champions 2005 (Rosberg), 2006 (Hamilton) and 2007 (Glock); race wins for Kubica, Piquet Jr and the F1 class of 2006–2010; the inaugural-era record that established GP2 as F1's definitive antechamber.

What to check before you buy

Chassis histories run through the GP2 fleet records and subsequent BOSS GP/private ownership — Rosberg/Hamilton-season team cars (ART provenance especially) carry collector premiums that entry lists must support. The Mecachrome V8's rebuild status is the cost anchor, serviced by the same specialist circle as the GP2/08's; check gearbox generation and software access, tub crash history, and spares inventory — the /05's earlier electronics need sourcing patience versus the /08. Cars actively run in BOSS-style events with data and current systems justify their premiums over garage finds.

Did you know

  • Hamilton's 2006 GP2 title included a Silverstone drive through the field that paddock veterans still cite as the moment his F1 seat became inevitable.
  • GP2's launch-season budget cap was set below a top F3000 campaign's — more power, more speed, less money, the pitch that killed its predecessor overnight.
  • The GP2/05's crash-test requirements matched contemporary F1 minima — feeder drivers crashed with world-championship protection for the first time.
