History

Mercedes-AMG confirmed a GT4 programme in December 2016, at its season-end awards dinner in Stuttgart 13. The car was shown at the Spa 24 Hours in July 2017, priced at €198,850 before tax 1. It used the AMG GT R road car as its base and kept the twin-turbo V8 12. The aluminium spaceframe came from the road car, with a steel roll cage added 23. Power drives the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential transaxle 215. Development partner HWA ran three prototypes in test races during 2017 12.

Testing included a 30-hour endurance run at the Lausitzring and a planned 30,000 km of track work 1. First customer deliveries were due at the end of 2017, with racing from 2018 1. By March 2020 Mercedes had delivered more than 120 cars to customer teams 3. Power, weight and fuel are set race by race through Balance of Performance 39.

In March 2020 Mercedes launched an updated GT4 aimed at endurance racing, priced at €209,000 before tax 3. Brake cooling, the oil cooler layout and the rear track rods were revised, and GT3-style LED lights were fitted 34. Earlier cars could be brought to the new homologation with an update package 34. A Japanese team engineer said the kit fixed the oil temperature problem of the 2018 car 6.

In April 2025 SRO and the Belgian federation RACB granted a fresh homologation, valid until 2029 7. The update brought engine calibration changes, natural-fibre splitter and wing parts, rain lights and revised rear dampers 7. Owners buy it as a re-homologation kit priced at €7,990 7. The car races in GT4 European Series, GT4 America and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, among others 7.

Palmarès

From its 2018 debut to March 2020 the GT4 started 363 races, with 53 overall wins, 151 class wins and 137 podiums 3. That tally included three class wins at the Nürburgring 24 Hours 3. In Japan the car took the Super Taikyu ST-Z class title in 2019 and 2020 5. In 2020 AMG GT4s won four of the five ST-Z rounds 6.

What to check before you buy

Confirm which homologation the car matches: original, 2020 update or 2025 kit: SRO GT4 cars are only eligible with the homologation file and an SRO GT4 certificate. The 2025 kit carries eligibility to 2029. Ask for the engine distance and the lifing records for engine and gearbox: One owner reports an engine rebuild point of 40,000 km. Sellers advertise lifing done to factory schedules, so ask to see the paperwork. Check that the 2020 oil cooler layout and brake cooling parts are fitted on a 2018 or 2019 chassis: Without them the car can overheat its oil and brakes in long races. Inspect the rear track rods and ask whether they are the 2020 longer-life parts: Mercedes changed these parts in 2020 to extend their life. Make sure the laptop tuning cable and access to the AMG customer portal come with the car: Power levels are set by laptop. The portal holds service and setup data, torque figures, manuals and the spare parts catalogue. List the spares package: wheel sets, bodywork, splitter, skates and stands: Used cars are often sold with extra wheel sets and body parts. Their value changes the real price of the deal. Ask about accident history and check the aluminium spaceframe: The chassis is an aluminium spaceframe from the GT R road car. Repairs to it are a specialist job.

GT4 (original homologation)2017–2020Launch car on AMG GT R base with six-speed sequential transaxle and steel cage. Teams reported high engine oil temperatures in long, hot races. 2Earlier headlight and tail-light units that do not match the 2020 GT3; original oil cooler layout and front brake ducting.
GT4 2020 update (often called GT4 Evo)2020–2025Larger brake air intake and lines, carbon brake duct, new front disc and caliper adapters. Re-arranged oil cooler and carbon exhaust air duct. Longer-life rear track rods, bigger brake fluid tank, revised V8 torque control. New homologation valid from March 2020. 3LED headlights and tail lights shared with the 2020 GT3; natural-fibre bonnet edge. Earlier cars can carry the same parts via the update kit, so ask for the kit invoice.
GT4 2025 re-homologation2025–presentEngine calibration changed for drivability, natural-fibre front splitter and rear wing parts, new rain lights, revised rear dampers. Homologation valid until 2029. 7New rain lights and natural-fibre splitter and wing. Ask for proof of the €7,990 re-homologation kit.

Known issues

  • Engine oil overheating on original-spec cars — Oil temperature reaches its limit in long or summer races; one Super Taikyu team had to short-shift at Autopolis in 2019. The 2020 kit moved the oil cooler. unknown (part of the 2020 update kit) 6
  • Front brake heat and wear in endurance use — Brake temperatures and wear rise over long stints or in hot weather. Mercedes answered with larger ducts, a new front disc and caliper adapters in 2020. 4
  • Rear track rod life — Mercedes fitted modified rear track rods with longer life in 2020, shared with the GT3. Cars without the update still run the original parts. 3
  • Heavy Balance of Performance penalties in pro series — One IMSA owner ran about 180 kg of added weight and a power setting about 42 hp down. In SRO GT4 America (October 2025) the car carried +30 kg at Power Level 2. not a repair cost; affects results 8
  • Slow refuelling — The 120-litre tank sits high at the rear, so refuelling takes longer in endurance races. BoP can also cap usable fuel, about 78 litres in one IMSA case. not a repair cost 6
  • Homologation expiry without the 2025 kit — The current homologation runs to 2029 and comes as a re-homologation kit. A car without it may not match the current homologation file used at scrutineering. €7,990 for the kit (April 2025), plus fitting 7

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 2018 AMG GT4 and the 2020 Evo?

The 2020 car has better brake cooling, a new front disc, a re-arranged oil cooler, longer-life rear track rods and GT3-style LED lights. Mercedes sold the same changes as a kit for older cars. A 2018 chassis with the kit can match the 2020 homologation.

Is the AMG GT4 still eligible to race?

Yes. In April 2025 SRO and RACB granted a new homologation valid until 2029. To use it, a car needs the re-homologation kit, priced at €7,990 when announced. Check that the seller has fitted it and holds the paperwork.

How long does the engine last between rebuilds?

One North American owner reports a rebuild point of 40,000 km for the V8. We could not open an official Mercedes schedule. Ask the seller for the lifing sheet and the distance on engine and gearbox.

Why do AMG GT4s sometimes look slow in results?

The car is easy to drive, so Balance of Performance often adds weight and cuts power. One IMSA owner ran about 180 kg of extra weight. The handicap changes by event and series, so check the current BoP sheet.

Where do I get parts?

Mercedes-AMG supplies parts and technical data through its customer racing portal. In North America the parts operation is run by Multimatic in Mooresville, North Carolina. A Japanese team reported parts arriving in about a week by airmail.
