Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32) — Group A
The R32 GT-R earned 'Godzilla' the hard way: 29 straight wins in Japanese Group A, Bathurst 1000 victories that changed Australian racing law, and a legacy that makes documented race-history R32s blue-chip Japanese collectibles.
History
Nissan engineered the R32 GT-R of 1989 explicitly to destroy Group A touring racing: the RB26DETT twin-turbo six was designed around the class's turbo-equivalency mathematics, ATTESA E-TS four-wheel drive put the power down where rear-drive rivals spun, and HICAS rear steer sharpened a big coupé into a circuit weapon. In race trim beyond 550 hp, the sums worked perfectly.
The domination was absolute: 29 wins from 29 championship races across four straight All-Japan Touring Car Championship titles (1990–1993), victory at the 1991 Spa 24 Hours, and the Australian campaign that wrote legend — Bathurst 1000 wins in 1991 and 1992 (the latter's storm-shortened chaos and Jim Richards' 'pack of arseholes' podium speech now folklore), results so crushing that Australia's rulemakers effectively regulated the car out, and 'Godzilla' entered the racing lexicon via the Australian press.
Today the hierarchy is steep: genuine period Group A chassis — NISMO, Gibson Motorsport, HKS builds — are documented, collected and seven-figure-adjacent; period-correct Group A recreations campaign in historic touring grids; and the R32 road-car boom lifts everything GT-R-shaped. The model anchors Japanese performance collecting the way the E30 M3 anchors German.
Palmarès
All-Japan Touring Car Champion 1990–1993 with a perfect 29-from-29 race record; Bathurst 1000 winner 1991 and 1992 (Gibson Motorsport, Richards/Skaife); Spa 24 Hours winner 1991; Macau Guia race wins; N1 endurance domination in Japan — the most complete Group A record of any car bar none.
What to check before you buy
Provenance tiers rule: genuine period Group A cars (NISMO/Gibson/HKS chassis are individually documented — engage the recognized historians), period N1/race-history road-based cars, modern Group A-spec recreations, and the vast modified road-car market each price on different logic. On anything claiming race history, entry lists and photographs decide. Mechanically: RB26 provenance (numbers-matching matters at collector level), ATTESA and HICAS system health, shell rust at strut towers and sills, and honest accounting of decades of modification. Australian-delivered and Gibson-connected cars carry particular premiums in that market.
Did you know
- 'Godzilla' was coined by Australian magazine Wheels — the nickname for the Japanese monster that ate their touring car championship stuck globally.
- Group A equivalency rules rated the RB26's 2.6 turbo against 4.3 litres — Nissan chose the displacement precisely to hit the class's sweet spot with 4WD.
- After the R32's 1992 Bathurst win amid crowd hostility, winner Jim Richards' furious podium speech became Australian motorsport's most replayed moment — and rules changed within the year.
