Porsche 804

The 804 is Porsche's only in-house Grand Prix winner: the 1962 flat-eight F1 car that took Rouen with Gurney — a handful built, all accounted for, collection-grade in the extreme as the KB has always noted.

History

Porsche's Formula 1 chapter peaked and closed in one season: the 804 (1962) — the marque's purpose-built answer to the 1.5-litre formula, the air-cooled flat-eight's ~180 horsepower in a slender aluminium single-seater — winning the French Grand Prix at Rouen with Dan Gurney (Porsche's only championship F1 victory as a constructor) and the non-championship Solitude race before the same season's costs-versus-priorities arithmetic ended the programme: Stuttgart choosing sports-car racing's road-relevance over the open-wheel war, the F1 withdrawal that made the 804's single summer permanent.

The production reality is the spec_note's law: a handful of chassis built, all accounted for — the type's population documented absolutely, museum-and-collection custody (the factory's own examples included) defining existence, and market appearances generational events when they occur at all.

The card's buyer relevance is contextual aristocracy: the 804 anchors Porsche single-seater provenance (the 718 F2 adventures' valuations reference it), demonstrates at the marque's heritage events, and represents the collection tier where diligence means institutional scholarship.

Palmarès

The French Grand Prix 1962 at Rouen — Gurney's win, Porsche's only in-house championship F1 victory — plus Solitude's non-championship triumph: one summer's summit, permanent by withdrawal.

What to check before you buy

Collection-grade in the extreme — the spec_note verbatim: the handful of 804s are individually documented, largely institutionally held, and market appearances are generational events negotiated at scholarship level rather than listed — the practical guidance being contextual: 804 provenance anchors the marque's single-seater market (the 718 F2 cars' valuations reference the F1 summit), heritage-event demonstration custody is the type's public life, and any genuine availability engages the auction aristocracy's full apparatus. For buyers below the summit, the 718 family's F2 chapter is the obtainable adjacency.

Did you know

  • Rouen 1962 is the marque's only in-house championship F1 win — one victory, then withdrawal: the rarest kind of perfect record.
  • The flat-eight's air-cooled 180 horsepower fought the era's V8s on Stuttgart's terms — the sports-car company's engineering accent in open-wheel form.
  • All accounted for is the population's law: a handful of chassis whose individual biographies the scholarship knows absolutely.
