Surtees TS9 (Formula 1)
The TS9 was Team Surtees' best Grand Prix car: John Surtees' own-name DFV runner of 1971–72 that took podiums and non-championship victory in period, and today offers genuine 1970s F1 ownership below Lotus and McLaren money.
History
John Surtees — still the only world champion on two wheels and four — built his constructor project around pragmatic Cosworth-kit engineering, and the TS9 of 1971 (evolved TS9B for 1972) was its high point: a clean aluminium monocoque, DFV power, Hewland gears and honest aerodynamics, campaigned by Surtees himself, Mike Hailwood, Tim Schenken and Andrea de Adamich.
The results were the solid midfield-to-podium record of a serious independent: Hailwood's famous 1971 Italian GP fourth in the closest F1 finish ever, non-championship victory in the 1971 Oulton Park Gold Cup (Surtees' own hands), points finishes through 1972, and the team's parallel F2 title success feeding drivers upward.
For historic buyers the TS9 is the connoisseur's 3-litre entry: Masters Historic F1 and Monaco Historique eligibility, DFV-Hewland running gear with universal specialist support, documented chassis histories through the marque registrars — at values meaningfully under equivalent Lotus 72s or McLarens. The Surtees name's quiet renaissance (and the founder's unmatched biography) adds provenance romance the price doesn't yet fully reflect.

What to check before you buy
Surtees chassis records document the TS9/TS9B tubs — verify identity, period driver history (Hailwood association carries premium) and continuous ownership through the marque historians. Standard DFV-era diligence applies: engine spec and rebuild status (short-stroke period spec versus historic-racing builds), Hewland DG/FG internals, monocoque corrosion and crash repairs at the fuel-bag bays. Confirm current HTP papers for Masters/Monaco eligibility. As an undervalued marque, buy the best-documented car available — the gap to blue-chip 70s F1 pricing is the investment thesis.
