Maserati GranTurismo MC GT4

The GranTurismo MC GT4 brought the Trident back to customer racing in 2010: a 4.7 V8 gentleman's GT4 whose European Trofeo and GT4 class campaigns made it the era's most charismatic — and now most affordable — Italian customer racer.

History

Maserati Corse followed its MC12 GT1 adventure with something saner: the GranTurismo MC, a GT4-class racer built from the Pininfarina coupé with the 4.7-litre naturally aspirated V8 (Ferrari F136 family) at around 450 hp, a robotized sequential gearbox and the class's mandated modest aero. Launched in 2010, it served double duty — GT4 grids across Europe and the single-make Trofeo Maserati (later Trofeo MC World Series), which toured Grand Prix venues with identical race-prepped GranTurismos.

In GT4 competition the MC took class wins and championship placings in European GT4 Cup and national GT series through the mid-2010s, its V8 soundtrack routinely voted the category's best noise. The Trofeo's world-series format meanwhile built a small, devoted owner community and a documented fleet.

With production long ended, the MC GT4 has become the affordable Italian entry to historic-adjacent GT racing: eligible for GT Cup classes, one-make classics grids and track programmes, priced below German rivals of equal age, and supported by the Ferrari-engine specialist network. It is the rare race car bought as much for its voice as its lap times — and honestly sold that way.

Palmarès

GT4 European Cup class race wins and podium campaigns 2010–2014; national GT championship class results in Italy, France and Benelux; Trofeo Maserati/MC World Series titles across its 2010–2016 seasons at venues from Paul Ricard to Shanghai — the record of a strong-selling gentleman's programme rather than a factory assault.

What to check before you buy

Verify a genuine Maserati Corse build (chassis records exist; road-car conversions circulate) and whether it's a GT4-spec or Trofeo-spec car — electronics, aero and eligibility differ in detail. The F136-family V8 is understressed and Ferrari-specialist-supported; the MC Shift robotized gearbox's actuator and clutch condition is the known cost centre — recent service documented or priced in. Check crash repairs at the front structure, cage datestamps for current racing, and completeness of MC-specific bodywork (panels are the scarce items). The owner community and former Trofeo teams are the due-diligence network — most surviving cars are known to them.

Did you know

  • The Trofeo MC World Series raced on Formula 1 weekends from Europe to China — gentleman drivers got GP paddock access as part of the package.
  • The MC's 4.7 V8 shares its architecture with Ferrari's F430 engine — the Trident's customer racer runs Maranello internals under Modena bodywork.
  • Paddock polls of the GT4 era repeatedly ranked the Maserati the best-sounding car in the class — a marketing asset Maserati leaned on shamelessly.
