Porsche 914/6 GT
The 914/6 GT turned Porsche's mid-engined 'people's car' into a class killer: Le Mans GT class winner in 1970, Marathon de la Route victor and today the historic-racing insider's Porsche — 911 performance economics with rarer-car cachet.
History
Porsche's 914/6 — the six-cylinder version of the VW-Porsche joint venture — received the factory GT treatment in 1970: steel flares over racing wheels, 911S-spec brakes and suspension hardware, and the 2.0 flat-six in Weber-carbed race tune around 210 hp, homologated for GT racing where its mid-engined balance embarrassed heavier metal.
The debut year delivered the legend: class victory (sixth overall) at Le Mans 1970, outright win in the 86-hour Marathon de la Route at the Nürburgring, and European GT/rally class results that proved the concept — before Porsche's competition focus returned to the 911 line and the 914's works chapter closed early, leaving a short, sharp record and limited genuine GT production.
Historic racing rediscovered it enthusiastically: 914/6 GTs run FIA Appendix K grids, Le Mans Classic and US vintage events with the handling advantage period rivals remember, while values — long the 911's shadow — have climbed as collectors recognized the rarity: factory GTs are documented and few, correct M471-optioned cars close behind, and honest GT-spec builds the accessible tier.
Palmarès
Le Mans GT class winner 1970 (Ballot-Léna/Chasseuil, 6th overall); Marathon de la Route outright winner 1970 (86 hours, Nürburgring); European GT class results and rally outings including Monte Carlo top-ten 1971 — the compressed record of a two-season works flирtation that historic racing has extended for decades.
What to check before you buy
Factory GT authenticity is documentable: genuine M471/GT cars carry specific chassis records (Porsche's Kardex and the 914 registries), factory flare construction details and drivetrain specification the community knows intimately — GT tributes on 914/6 (or converted 914/4) bases are legitimate tools priced far apart. Check the notorious battery-tray/longitudinal rust zones forensically, engine-type correctness (2.0 T/E-based race builds versus later 911 transplants), and HTP papers for Appendix K. The 914 community's registries make honest buying easy; the price gap makes dishonest selling tempting — paper first.
Did you know
- The Marathon de la Route win came over 86 continuous hours at the Nürburgring — the 914/6 GT's first major victory was also endurance racing's most absurd format.
- Period Porsche salesmen struggled with the 914's VW association; the GT's Le Mans class win became the internal argument that badge-snobbery was leaving money on the table.
- Factory GT flares were steel, welded and leaded — the construction detail restorers use to separate Weissach's work from decades of glassfibre tributes.
