
Ralt RT1 (F3/F2/Atlantic)
The RT1 relaunched Ron Tauranac's career in 1975 and rebuilt the customer single-seater market: one adaptable monocoque design that won in Formula 3, Formula 2 and Atlantic trim, seeding the Ralt dynasty that dominated junior racing for a decade.
History
After selling Brabham, Ron Tauranac returned to construction with Ralt and the RT1: a straightforward, superbly executed aluminium monocoque adaptable to F3, F2 and Atlantic regulations — the same pragmatic customer-car philosophy that had built Brabham's business, updated for the mid-70s. Production quality and parts support immediately out-classed the cottage competition.
Results validated the concept across categories: European and national F3 race wins through 1975–78 (the class's Piquet-era generation cut teeth in RT1s), F2 campaigns, and Atlantic/Pacific sales across the Atlantic markets. The design's success financed the RT-series lineage — RT3, RT4 — that would own junior formulas into the mid-1980s.
Historic racing now treats the RT1 as the definitive mid-70s F3 mount: HSCC Classic F3, Monoposto and continental historic grids run healthy fields, parts flow through Ralt specialists, and the car's forgiving handling makes it a favourite first historic single-seater above FF1600. Values remain moderate — the RT3's later fame overshadows it, to buyers' benefit.

Ralt's production records and the historic-F3 community document RT1 identities — verify chassis number and which specification (F3/F2/Atlantic) the tub was built and now runs as, since period conversions were common and class eligibility follows current configuration. Check monocoque corrosion and repairs, Toyota/Ford twin-cam engine builder provenance for F3 spec, and Hewland Mk9/FT200 internals. Cars with current HTP papers and active-series history command the premium; the RT1's value gap under the RT3 makes a sorted example the thinking buyer's classic F3 entry.
