Ralt RT3 (Formula 3)

The RT3 is THE 1980s Formula 3 car: Ayrton Senna's 1983 British F3 title mount and the chassis that won essentially everything in the class from 1980 to 1984 — now the blue-chip centre of historic F3 racing.

History

Ron Tauranac's RT3 of 1980 applied ground-effect-era lessons to Formula 3 with characteristic customer-car discipline: aluminium monocoque, sliding-skirt-derived underbody refined year by year (RT3/81, /82, /83 evolutions), Toyota 2T-G or VW power through Hewland gears, and the production consistency that made 'which RT3' matter less than 'which team'.

The class capitulated: British and European F3 belonged to the RT3 through 1984, and its champions' list is junior racing's greatest — Senna's 1983 British title (his ferocious season-long duel with Martin Brundle's identical RT3 remains F3's most storied campaign), plus champions and winners from the Piquet-adjacent generation before them. Macau's inaugural F3 Grand Prix of 1983 fell to Senna's RT3.

Historic racing crowns it accordingly: HSCC Classic F3 and European equivalents run RT3-heavy grids, Senna/Brundle-season provenance defines the collector summit, and the model's parts ecosystem (Ralt specialists, remanufactured underbodies) keeps ordinary chassis genuinely raceable. It is the default answer to 'which historic F3 should I buy' — with prices tiered precisely by period history.

Palmarès

British F3 champion 1980–1984 inclusive (Senna's 1983 crown the most famous, Brundle runner-up in the era's defining duel); European F3 titles and Marlboro-era race wins; inaugural Macau F3 Grand Prix winner 1983 (Senna); the near-total class record that made 'F3' and 'RT3' synonymous for half a decade.

What to check before you buy

Provenance tiers are steep: documented Senna/Brundle-season team cars sit in collector territory, period British/Euro F3 race-history chassis next, then honest club-raced tubs — Ralt records and the F3 historians sort identities, and 'ex-famous-team' claims need entry-list proof. Verify evolution year (81/82/83 underbody and suspension differ; class rules may care), monocoque repairs, Toyota 2T-G builder provenance and Hewland internals. Current HTP papers and active HSCC/Euro historic eligibility carry real value. The RT3 market is liquid by historic single-seater standards — comparables exist; use them.

Did you know

  • Senna versus Brundle 1983: identical RT3s, nine wins each into the finale, and a title decided amid collisions and stewards' rooms — British F3's most replayed season.
  • Tauranac updated the RT3's underbody annually but kept tub interchangeability — teams bought evolution kits, not new cars, a customer kindness rivals hated.
  • The 1983 Macau win completed Senna's junior CV in one weekend; the trophy's significance made Macau F3's reputation as much as Senna's.
