After the Polo R WRC's 2013–16 domination, Volkswagen's works withdrawal left Hannover's engineering seeking outlets — and the Polo GTI R5 of 2018 channelled it into customer rallying: the mandated 1.6 turbo with world-championship-grade calibration discipline, five-speed sequential, and chassis refinement testers immediately ranked at the class's front.
