Dallara GP2/11

The GP2/11 served the longest front-line life of any modern feeder chassis: seven seasons from 2011 through F2's first year (2017), crowning champions from Grosjean's comeback to Gasly, Vandoorne and Leclerc.

History

Dallara's third GP2 generation refined the formula rather than reinventing it: the proven Mecachrome 4.0 V8 continued at 612 hp, aero followed contemporary F1 cues (higher nose, cleaner sidepods), and the chassis was engineered for a planned three-season cycle that economics stretched to seven — GP2's 2011–2016 seasons plus the rebranded FIA Formula 2's transitional 2017.

Its champions' roll is the modern grid's spine: Romain Grosjean's 2011 redemption title, Davide Valsecchi, Fabio Leimer, Jolyon Palmer, Stoffel Vandoorne's record-breaking 2015, Pierre Gasly's 2016 crown and Charles Leclerc's 2017 rookie masterpiece in the car's farewell season — with race-winners including Nasr, Lynn, Sirotkin and the mid-2010s F1 intake almost entire.

The fleet's afterlife is the ex-feeder market's mainstream: BOSS GP's OPEN class runs GP2/11s at the front, hillclimb and demonstration programmes absorbed dozens, and the type today offers the newest V8-era feeder experience available privately — Leclerc-generation machinery with the same Mecachrome support ecosystem as its /05 and /08 forebears.

Palmarès

GP2 Series champions 2011–2016 (Grosjean, Valsecchi, Leimer, Palmer, Vandoorne, Gasly) and FIA F2 champion 2017 (Leclerc); Vandoorne's 2015 season set the category's points and wins records; Monaco and Spa feeder-race classics throughout — the longest championship service of any GP2/F2 design.

What to check before you buy

Seven seasons of fleet life mean provenance spans champions' tubs to well-worn privateer chassis — Dallara records and team histories sort them, with Leclerc/Vandoorne/Gasly-season cars carrying real collector premiums that entry lists must document. Mecachrome V8 rebuild status anchors cost; check gearbox generation (updates across the run), tub crash history, and 2017-season halo-free spec confirmation (the GP2/11 never carried one — its F2 successor did). BOSS GP-active cars with current systems and spares command deserved premiums over long-stored examples.

Did you know

  • Leclerc won the 2017 title with a fractured relationship to gravity — pole-and-win weekends in a seven-year-old design against fresher machinery arguments.
  • Vandoorne's 2015 campaign (7 wins, 16 podiums from 21) remains the category's statistical high-water mark — set in the /11's fifth season.
  • The chassis served so long that some tubs raced under three series names — GP2, GP2 Asia-adjacent events and FIA F2 — without leaving front-line duty.
